how do you pronounce this name?

Poor kid. I like both names but they are different, pick one

I've always heard it Finola...as in rhymes with granola

Fiona is a different name altogether, and it's pronounced Fee-ohn-a

You spell the mother's name "S-T-U-P-I-D." ::yes:: God bless that poor doomed child. Forever "correcting" people who have it right all thanks to Mommy Dumbest.

Why do people do these things to their children?

Every time that kid has someone that sees that name they are going to be calling her Fin- ola--no one EVER is going to think that is Fiona! Its one think to spell a name oddly but another to give them a totally different name and claim it is pronounced a different way!

I don't see what is so strange about it. My daughter's name is Gabriella. It's pronounced "Susan." :confused3 We don't have any issues or confusion.

Is it possible she is just going by a different name even they the spellings are similar? My mother's cousin in Ireland goes by Brenda but her birth name is Bridget. The same goes for her daughters - they don't go by their birth names.

Back in the day when I taught HS chemistry, I had a girl in class whose name was spelled "Tonya", and I pronounced it the way I normally would a name spelled that way, which is Tahn-ya, but she explained to me that it was pronounced Tone-ya, and that she had a sister whose name was Tanya. Poor girl.

Now I am a family physician, and I could probably go on for pages with the unusual names and spellings that I've seen over the years. Some are probably correct spellings, and I am not familiar with that particular name. Like, I have a 8 wk old patient named "Eian", which is pronounced like Ian. And an adult woman spelled "Mitchell", which she pronounces Michelle. I have heard of children who were probably named because the mom heard terms that were spoken in labor and delivery, like Placenta, Previa, and Female, pronounced like Tamale.

We used to have a list of patients who were named like famous people, like Betty Ford, Britney Spears, and others. We had a total of over 100 such names. We even have a Mary Disney, who is about the most un-Disney like person I've known. Wouldn't dare ask her if she were related to Walt Disney.

tagging along,,,, I would pronounce it Fin-ol-la

how would you say this name Cialin ???

they normally call her Fifi or Fi which is why it took me so long to realize it was pronounced fiona..the first time I heard it, I thought I heard it wrong. then she said it again, so I asked her how do you pronounce it..and thats when she told me it was interchangeable.

I'll admit, when I see Tonya & Tanya, I pronounce them differently. Tonya is more the way you wrote, Tahn-ya (sort of like con). The only Tanya I've ever known was pronounced like the color tan. So, I'd think they were Tahn-ya and Tan-ya.

These days though with all the rage of invented spelling (and invented pronunciation) who knows?
