I say it just like it is spelled = car-a-mel. I never understood the "carmel" pronounciation. I mean, don't you people SEE that "a" in the middle?

Same here! :rotfl:

I'm Southern and have always heard it pronounced cair - ah - mel.
Ummm,it's making me hungry for pralines. BTW,praline is pronounced:praw leen not: pray leen at least in New Orleans.

::yes:: I'm from New Orleans and I say ditto on everything above! :thumbsup2

So how do you "car-muhl" people say a word like "caravan"? Would it be "car-van?" :confused3

Count me in as stupid too, since I have always pronounced it "Carmel". And no, I do say CarAvan, It's just the way people pronounced the word as I was growing up where I lived. Just like some people say pop and others say soda. I am sure I could find a word that the 3 syllable people don't pronounce "correctly" either.

Funny how the majority of people on this poll "aren't so bright" either.

Now, LoraJ, I'm really being "tongue-in-cheek" about this. I definitely don't think anyone is stupid. The whole thread just brought up an internal office joke that occurred around some not-so-bright office mates. Bad joke, obviously, to everyone here who wasn't there and I apologize if I've hurt anyone's feelings. I never wanted to do that.

As to the logic as to soda and pop--well, that isn't really the same. Those are two different names (and totally different spellings) for one product.

This is a spelling where the letters are quite clear--it is a three syllable word, yet the middle syllable is inexplicably being dropped. I not aware of too many cases were the letter "A" is silent or dropped even as other letters are routinely done. Honestly, I just find the whole thing curious.

I don't think caravan has two acceptable pronunciations.

Honestly, everyone I know says carmel, not caramel. Carmel corn, carmel apples...carmel!

You say "potato," we say "spud." :teeth:

the 2-syllable Southern pronunciation

No offense, but I'm as Southern as you can get, and I use the 3 syllable pronunciation (so does everybody I know). Maybe it depends on what part of the south you're in (I'm the Deep South). :thumbsup2
