the 2-syllable Southern pronunciation

I say it just like it is spelled = car-a-mel. I never understood the "carmel" pronounciation. I mean, don't you people SEE that "a" in the middle?

3 syllables. I got into an argument once with this guy at work, because he INSISTS it's pronounced with 2 syllables. I still think he's wrong. ;)

With the "a" in the middle of the word, does it not contain 3 syllables? :confused3

ETA: Sorry, I got busy with other things before finishing my post. Just now discovered others made my point. Definitely *3* syllables. :thumbsup2

I say ca-ruh-mel. I guess it has something to do with where you're from. I'm Cuban and my language growing up was Spanish...in Spanish it is pronounced CA-RA-ME-LO.

He is!

Interesting, in my office, there are two people who say it with 2 syllables and, hmmmm, how should I say it? Well, they aren't the brightest of our staff. :teeth:

Caramelos? MMMM I miss those! :rotfl:

mine is a cross between the 2 choices. I throw a tiny "a" in there, it may sound like car mel. When its really car a mel. but not the southern version.

:guilty: Just cause you say it with 2 syllables doesn't make you stupid! It's just the way I've learned and heard it all my life.

:rotfl: Sorry, maybe it's the Nyquil working, but I found this funny.

I say carmel. I think the only people I've heard use car-a-mel are on TV.

For some stupid reason Car-a-mel apple just doesnt sound as good as a carmel apple either.

I DO see it--however, I've always kind of considered it a silent A. :lmao: I also do not pronounce the H in vehicle. But that's a whole other argument.
