How do you pay for dining plan if you are renting?

Occasionally I will "rent" points that are about to expire and do so on the Rent and Trade Board. But now the question arises as to how will the Dining Plan be paid for since it must be paid for at the time of adding it to the reservation.

For anyone who has recently rented, how did you handle this? Did you ask the renter for their credit card information OR did you put it on YOUR credit card and ask for payment up front?

Thanks!

It does not need to be paid at the time of booking. A reservation can be done, and then you have to add dining no less than 48 hours before arrival.

If it was me (I have rented points a few times), I would require a cashiers check or the equivalent, and pay for it on my credit card. I would be leery about "touching" the renter's credit card information. Too many privacy issues being violated.

From what I understand, it has to be paid for at the time of ADDING it to the reservation, not at the time of booking the reservation itself (I could be totally off, though :goodvibes I'm a DVC newbie).

However, I agree with above poster - ask for payment then put it on my own card.

Thanks for the replies; I did mean "at the time of adding the plan" and not at the time of booking the reservation. I'll change the original post! :thumbsup2

I think I'll ask for a cashier's check and then just add it to my card.

Thanks again for the help!

Another option would be for the renter to get a gift card. Either one with a visa or mastercard logo, or a Disney GC for the amount of the dining plan. They could give you the necessary card info. That would protect the renter as the only amount on the card would be for the dining plan.

Similarly, you can use Disney Chase Visa Rewards cards. Same idea-- the only money on them is for the ddp. I did this myself recently.

Funny I was thinking of this. I'm going to look into getting a Disney Visa and I'll use it for the ddp. :thumbsup2

I would give the renter the choice---they can either give me their CC info, and I would book it for them, or they can paypal me the amount, adding in the service fee.

If you put it on your credit card is it billed right away? One thing I worry about is that if it's not charged right away and charged when they get there that when they do arrive that they will ask "Do you want to keep this card on file for all your purchases?" therefore I would be billed for all their purchases....

I've tried using the Visa gift card thing for a renter and I can't get it to work. It keeps coming back as declined even though the gift card has more than enough money on it.
Any advice??

MS will ask whether or not you want the credit card kept on file and if you say No then they indicate no. Upon checkin the guest will be asked for "their" cc info should they want to keep it on file. I thought about that also and called MS to find out how it's handled.

I ask for the money via PayPal, once received I call up MS to add the dining plan and pay with my credit card.

I think someone has posted that MS will not take someone else's credit card # from an owner.

But using a gift card wouldn't be an issue because there's no name on the gift card, right?

Correct. It is only an actual CC in someone else's name that I read they can not take.

Any gift card, including the prepaid Visa's would be fine.

This is incorrect, I just rented points from someone and setup a "virtual temporary credit card #" with my Fidelity Visa. I enter the $ limit on the purchase and the expiration date at the Fidelity Visa website and it generates a temporary credit card #.

I gave the info: my name, temporary cc #, security code and expiration date to the DVC member and he booked/paid for the DxDP for me - no issues.

The charges showed up on my account.

Worked pretty well and I highly recommend. This avoids any privacy concerns since the # was temporary (I could also cancel the temporary # at any time).

I believe a lot of CC companies have this feature - they market it for use on internet purchases if you are worried about security.

I've seen someone post that MS asked if it was their card. But, in that case, it was their card. I have yet to see anyone report that MS would not allow them to use another person's card. If anyone does know of such a report, could they post a link?

I would be surprised if Disney would impose such a restriction, based on "follow the money." For most families, the dining plan is a small upsell, not a discount. It would be very un-Disney-like to not take money from guests... ;)

Well first of all thanks for all the suggestions. I finally decided to get a credit card just for Disney "stuff". I wanted the Disney Visa so I applied for one. Now, this card will be solely used for my trips and rentals should I have the extra points.

Thanks again everyone!!!:thumbsup2
