How do you NOT laugh at your friend?

Grumpy92... They are supposed to get back today, don't know what time. I have been hoping they would send me an e-mail card from innovations or imaginations, but they probably didn't know about those. I really wish I had known ahead of time they were going. I too am anxious to hear how their visit went! Think I'll try to call her tonight. Let you guys know as soon as I do!

Igruender... you live 30 minutes east of St. Louis? Where abouts? I grew up in Godfrey. Small world!

She may have been a twit about everything else, but not the heat; the heat index was running about 115F during the power outages last week. If she could take that in a built-for-STL house, Orlando won't be any worse.

I had a fellow teacher tell me just before Thanksgiving break one year that she and her husband were going to head down to Disney for a week after Christmas, because "it was such a quiet time there"!! I asked her if she was serious, did she know that that week was probably the busiest week of the year there?!? She was stunned--she felt like all the rest of the world would want to be at home....... :lmao:

i can help from laughing at others because, laughing at other people's ignorance or indecision is simply rude. i'm glad none of you are "friends" of mine. perhaps things even out when they laugh at you concerning decisions on which they are the "expert" and you are the novice.

rather, i choose to help inform someone who doesn't know all of the information i have gathered. if they then don't listen, that's their fault; but, even after a dozen+ trips to wdw, i'm not arrogant enough to think i have all the answers.

WOW! Sorry we aren't friends, but then again the one thing all of my friends have in common is the ability to laugh at their own stupidity. Laughter is an important quality.

cmassey, I think you missed the point of my original post. I'm not laughing at DF because I am an "expert" and she is a "novice" I have purposely choosen to withhold information from. If you read my post I did state if I had know she was going I would have sent her a WDW care package full of info. Unfortunately I didn't know she was going till less than 24 hours before they left.

Not meaning to sound mean here, but you really should get off the high horse, or at least wait until there is a need for the higher moral ground. I was not being disrespectful to or about my friend. I'm glad you aren't arrogant enough to think you have all the right answers, because boy, were you wrong on this one.

Okay you guys can all laugh at me now..
But really, what is the big deal with the heat? Where I live, our summers are 100-115, WITHOUT the heat index...and constantly it's above 110. I don't know what the heat index makes that, because I've never really cared to research. I keep covered, sun screened and shaded...is it really going to be worse at Orlando? I'm looking at the Heat Index for this week online, and the highest I see is 96 degrees...is that what you guys are considering hot? Or does it get higher? Cause 96 seems kinda cold to me hehe
Ok laugh all you want, then answer for me thanks :)

P.S. I wouldn't do the dining plan myself, because I don't eat very much, and it just seems pretty expensive. I can't imagine spending 30 dollars a day on food!

forgive me for misunderstanding. i didn't realize that when it was written: "So how do YOU keep from laughing at your friends, at least keep from laughing where they can hear you?" that i should have understood that you and the friend were sharing the laughter. my fault for missing the boat and being wrong on this one.

suezb... Not laughing at you, not until we become friends :rotfl2:

Seriously, I don't know where you live, I know you say you are used to 100 to 115, my question is it humid too? Florida is very humid. Also, are you used to spending 10 to 12 hours a day outside in this weather, walking around, in the sun? If you are, more power to you! As far as the dinning plan is concerned.... if you were thinking of doing a table service and a counter service and a snack at WDW, the $30 price is pretty cheap. If you were planning on going off property I'm sure you could save money.

cmassey... I forgive you for misunderstanding. Especially when it is obvious you still don't understand. But I forgive you.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm going off heat index...looking at my own area's heat index, we're generally very close to the temperature or slightly above, no more than 5. So if the temperature is showing 110, our heat index is 115. That's stil above a head index of 96. So that's where my confusion is coming in. I've asked other people about this but they aren't very good at answering :) As far as being outside, yes I'm outside quite a bit. I also don't have AC in my house OR my car (which I'm not happy about). I don't live in Seattle anymore, but at one point I did, and they have high humidity (80's as opposed to the 90% average of Orlando). They get in the high 90's a few times a year, and at those points it still wasn't as hot as it was here, even with the humidity. I've gone overboard on the cooling though, just in case. I have so many fans (I think 10) and 10 cooling bandanas, and 4 for the wrist. I'm just wondering if I'll really need them hehe.

As far as to the dining question....I wouldn't eat a counter service AND a table service. That's just way too much food. If anything, I'd do a breakfast on my own (I only like cereal for breakfast) and either a couple snacks (snacks being a croissant and fruit or a smoothie) and then a dinner...or a couple snacks and a lunch. I just wouldn't be able to eat both a dinner AND a lunch, especially the amount of food they give you at restaurants! Last week I only spent 10 dollars on food for the week, because of food I have stored, but I spend an average of 30 dollars a week on food. I buy in bulk, and it makes things so much cheaper :) Maybe the people who refuse the dining plans are like me, and don't really want to eat that much food, so they'd be better off not getting the dining plans :)

I found this website after our first trip. For the first trip, our only prep was the Disney website and the planning video. Fastpass was most certainly mentioned in there and we were so psyched because at Six Flags you have to PAY for what they now call a Flash Pass. Even though we were not well informed we still had a really great time, but that was mostly due to our attitude and not having sky high expectations. Even if we DID have high expectations WDW far exceeded them. Now that being said, the DIS has greatly improved the quality of my past 2 trips. In fact, I could see where going the week of Spring Break/Easter could have been a total mess if I didn't have a good plan. There are many things we would have surely missed had I not done my DIS homework, but I'd never have known they existed. We did a Wishes cruise and I would never have seen it to know we were missing it. This trip I have a surprise Family Magic Tour planned for the kids and I, again would never have known to miss it. I'd just assume the people doing some of these special things are celebs with lime green mickeys hanging off their fanny packs. The DIS is most definitely a trip enhancer but you can still have a great trip without it. I think attitude is the most important ingredient to feeling the magic.

This isn't the first time there has been a thread about this and it probably won't be the last - but what I notice as a trend in these threads - the novice people ask for advice and choose not to listen. That to me is where the fun begins - not because they are novices, but because they asked for help and advice and for whatever reason did not follow it. There is a reason that soooooo many guidebooks are written about touring WDW - and if you don't want to buy one - go to your library. The best thing about Disney is - the more you put into it - the more you'll get out of it! And to me more than half the fun of a trip is the planning. So I don't think we laugh because they are novices, we laugh because there is ample help out there - they asked for it and didn't take it. And I'm sorry - that CAN be funny!

Suezb... I grew up in the St. Louis area. Never noticed the heat or humidity there until I moved to Wisconsin. Aftef living here a year and going back to SL to visit I said "WOW! What happened to the weather?" Of course when I lived in St. Louis I lived in a central air conditioned home, drove an air conditioned car, worked in an airconditioned office... any given day total time outside was 2 1/2 minutes. :rotfl:

After living here in Wisconsin for 20 years I have lost all my tolerance for heat and humidity. That's why we go to WDW in winter. When the Floridians are wearing winter coats I'm walking around in shorts and a t-shirt. Guess it is all what you are used to! As far as your fans and cooling bandanas... Don't know if you've gone overrboard or not. But if you need them it is far better to have them than think "Darn! I should have brought them!"

My hat is off to you on your food budget! $30 a week on food? Even with buying in bulk that is quite an accomplishment. When I asked my friend if she was on the plan, it was because I know she would want 3 meals a day, and at least one of those meals to be at a nice sit down restaurant. And I know from a past experience the frustration of not having an ADR and trying to get in to any restaurant!

I hope you have a wonderful trip. Sounds like you are pretty well organized and prepared! :wizard:

I applaud those of you with a sense of humor about this! I get really frustrated when people ask me for advice as the "Disney expert" and then totally ignore it!
One guy I work with was really sincere about wanting help, and I introduced him to the DIS, mousesavers, Southwest Dings, All Star suites, and free dining (which will be in effect during his trip)! This guy really needed a break, because his hours at work were cut back. He thought he was going to have to cancel his trip. Now he is a true believer, and may be on the Dis boards at this very minute!
At the opposite extreme was a colleague who asked me THREE WEEKS before she wanted to go (with her family of five) where I was getting all these great deals to Disney--she couldn't find anything! :rotfl2:
(She is definitely the one who stops right in front of you in the parks ;)).
Anyway, those who laugh are better than I -- I let it bother me that people spend too much/wait too long/ can't find anyplace to eat. Gotta get more Zen about all this Disney planning, I guess :thumbsup2 .

Babar...
I know what you mean about the Florida people being weird in 60 degree weather! We get hot hot summers, but we also get cold cold winters...our low last year, without wind chill, was neg 18! My niece called who lives in Orlando, and said it was just soooo cold there, and she had to put on a coat. We asked her the temperature, and she said 65! At that point, it was in the 20's here! I was thinking "Man, I'd probably be out in T-shirts, not in winter coats!!! :rotfl2:
I actually contemplated buying another 4 bandanas and two misty mate things....I've held myself back so far, let's hope I can continue to do so! As it is, I don't think I'll run out of cooling things....maybe.....4 more can't hurt..right? eep

if she wanted to eat all her meals at Disney, then I'd have to agree that the dining plan would have been a nice deal. Maybe she'll remember that next time she goes! Did she ever get back to you and tell you how her trip was??

Now for Off Topic: By the way, I've been to St. Louis once, and I absolutely loved it! I would love to go back. We did a riverboat dinner (I would LOVE to eat on there again, best food ever!), had fun in the arch, and loved the cahokia mounds.

suezb... St. Louis does have a magic of it's own. Glad you liked the city! It still holds a special place in my heart. When I was a kid and they were building the arch my dad used to tell me "Next year they will build the croquet mallet and ball." :rotfl:

Haven't talked to DF yet, they were flying home today. Think I'll give her a call and see if they made it back yet. I'll let you guys know how her visit was as soon as I hear.

Oh, Suezb, I heard there is a shortage of misty fans and cooling bandanas, wonder why? :goodvibes Ok, maybe now I am laughing with you!

Maybe I'm missing something in the Original Post.

Why is the friend's ignorance of WDW funny? If the OP tried to educate her and she was resistant, then it's funny. But at least from the Original Post there's no indication that there was any attempt to help the person learn.

I just don't get it, laughing at someone who is not as experienced and doesn't know the correct information.

Again, if the person REFUSED to accept true and helpful info, then that person's false pride will come back to bite them, and there is some delicious humor in that. But otherwise, it seems kind of mean to "tease" her with questions but not try to actually inform her instead.

What am I missing here???

The OP said she found out about her DF's trip with less then 24 hours until they left. She didn't have time to get her DF up to speed. She said she would have loved to help her out but there was just no time.

It wasn't me! I know nothing! *Quickly hides her stash* :rolleyes1

Just wanted to point out that those cooling bandanas don't work so well when it is humid - the cooling comes from evaporation, doesn't it? Not much evaporates in WDW when it is oppressively humid!
