How do you know what to expect to pay for airfare?

We are booking a February trip to Disneyland. We have only ever been to Disney World, so I am completely unfamiliar on what to expect regarding flights to LAX. We are staying at the Grand Californian for 3 nights before heading to the Disney resort in Hawaii, Aulani. Do I book 2 separate round trip flights? One to LAX and then another from LAX to Hawaii and back? Can anyone give me a budget or amount I should have in mind for these flights? Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated!!

You need to start searching the web pages of various airlines for prices. All the airlines should be showing availability through mid-February. Or you can use a consolidated search engine, such as expedia.com, kayak.com, or itamatrix airfare.

I did a quick search on United Airlines for flights using the "multiple destinations" option for this routing (for dates in February 2014), JFK-LAX, LAX-HNL, HNL-JFK, and found fares of $761.29, which isn't bad.

Look into Jet Blue flights into Long Beach. It's closer than LAX to DL.

I read on another thread that we have to fly out of LAX for the California-Hawaii leg of our trip. We'll rent a car in Hawaii, so I'm not sure if we can rent it at one airport and return to another. I'm not too familiar with car rentals.

We are traveling in February, but dates are flexible. It is a 2 week trip. My kids are homeschooled, so we can definitely travel according to when prices and crowds are lower.

Just thinking....do you have resort reservations yet? Are you staying on DVC points? If yes, you may not be able to get reservations. Those two resorts fill very quickly. I would secure my hotels and then find airfare.

Yes, we are DVC members staying on points. Our 7 month window opens next week. As of now the nights we need are available. I know that can change in a matter of minutes, but we are very flexible with dates and view types for Aulani, so hopefully we can make something work. :)

Good luck, I hope you are able to get what you want! Your trip is just like I would like to do for California and then Aulani! We are in Upstate NY and airfare is what has been holding me back! Let us know how you make out!
