looking for a new job while working an old one?

I can get the time off for visits/interviews with no problem (I am part time) but would a new perspective employer have to call your old one?

Not that they would have anything bad to say about me.. I just wouldn't want to rock the boat until I had something definite.

Is that possible?

Have a list of references that aren't your current employer. This can include past employers, colleagues who have since moved on to other jobs, or, if you have to, trusted colleagues at your current job that are "in the know" about you looking.

Employers are usually pretty sensitive about this sort of thing and won't ask to contact your current boss until after they have extended an offer (if ever).
