Several yrs ago on Carnival we did an excursion that sounds exactly like DCL - go on a boat & then on a jeep and then go to Trunk bay for 1 1/2 hrs to snorkle and then go back the same way you came. We enjoyed Trunk Bay so much...It was the best beach I have ever been to and I wanted to no if there is a better way to get there so I could spend more time there and not have to do all the shuffling around? Or, could there possibly be another beach there just like it? Closer to the ship? I no...lots of questions, but this board has given me expert advice on everything else....I figured I would try once more! Thanx to everyone on this board for the feedback....I am officially addicted!!!::MinnieMo

We did Trunk Bay on our own on the 5/15 Eastern.

There are 2 ways to get there (well maybe more but I'll go over the 2.)
You can take a taxi to the Red Hook ferry (20 min. ride) (for $8 per person) and take the Red Hook ferry over to St. John ($3 per person one way). Then at St. John take a taxi to Trunk Bay ($4 per person one way) and pay the admission to the state park for Trunk Bay.

OR you can take the Charoltte Amalie ferry (at Downtown--so either a $3 taxi ride or long walk) to St. John--the Charlotte Amalie ferry is $7 one way. Then take the taxi over to Trunk Bay.

We did the Red Hook over and the Charlotte Amalie back (because we wanted to do a little shopping after St. John.) This allowed us plenty of time to enjoy Trunk Bay and also some shopping time.

The Red Hook ferry operates every hour on the hour. The Charlotte Amalie ferry is a 45 minute ride and operates on different times. Ours left at 15 minutes after the hour. Be sure to allow enough travel time back from St. John to St. Thomas. The taxi ride from the ship to Red Hook is about 20 minutes long.

We did the Red Hook Ferry on the way over and the CA ferry on the way back. We had to tender in from the Magic and it deposited us right at the CA ferry landing.

A word of caution, make sure you leave enough time to get through St. Thomas traffic and get back to the ship. Itcan be very crowded when there are a lot of ships in port.

Trunk Bay is worth it!

On My 15 Cruise, we rented a jeep from Avis and rode the Red Hook car ferry over to St John. You'll have more time on the island if you do it on your own, just make sure that you have plenty of time to return.
