How do you get fiber?

Hopefully, this won't get too graphic, but I'm wondering how you get enough fiber to "keep things moving"? My body is used to lots of fruit and breads. Since I've started counting carbs, those things just don't fit in that plan, and my body isn't getting the fiber it's used to. I'm actually guessing that this may be what's keeping the scale from moving very much as well.

Any suggestions? DH suggestion is to take a liquid fiber additive like citrucel. I know I couldn't stomach metamucil (YUCKK)!

Metamucil is available in tablets if you don't like to gulp it down...

If you're low-carbing, make sure you're getting enough fat - it greases the pipes, so to speak. ;)

You should be getting lots of fiber from veggies. However, I personally am NOT a veggie person. :p I've been making tuna salad with lots of diced green pepper, red onion and celery. I also snack on sunflower seeds - TONS of fiber there.

If all else fails, start adding stuff with sugar alcohols into your diet, remembering that a little goes a long way!

Good luck! :sunny:

I have found a wonderful, tasteless fiber powder, that I add to my morning coffee. I think it's called "Insta-Fiber", it comes in a white plastic cylinder. When I can't get to "Fresh Fields", which is the Whole Food store that carries it, I use Benefiber, also tasteless & can be added to coffee. Benefiber is available at CVS & probably most drug stores. I also have become aware of other sources of fiber. We don't eat cereal every day, but I try to only use high fiber cold cereals, like Uncle Sam, Kashi Good Friend, Barbara's Puffins & in a pinch, plain old Cheerios. I also found that you have to keep your water intake up.

I think in this department, those on low carb- and those on WW's will definately get their fiber from different sources. I eat lots of whole grains, wild rices, veggies, fruits, my soy yogurt has fiber, soy crisps. I really have to watch my fiber because I get so much, that I can actually have problems if I am not drinking enough. It's funny to think you can have the exact problem that fiber is supposed to relieve, if you don't drink enough to push it through.

I know that my scale definately stalls when I get this way. Good luck!

When I went to my Dr. 2 days after starting Atkins, not only was she very supportive, she gave me some great advice. She told me to take 2 Fiber-Con every night. I was a bit resistant at first being fearful that my body would come to rely on these pills. But it got to the point where I needed some help. So I got the Sam's brand of Fiber-Con, added two to my evening regime, and I have been fine ever since. (I also believe that it -insoluble fiber- can help to reduce cholesterol too, if that is a problem for you.)

Good Luck! :)

Second the Fiber-con! My whole family gets constipated pretty easily, especially on vacation. We've known to rely on Fiber-Con for years when things get "sluggish".

Guacamole!!!!! :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Avacado has TONS of fiber!! And it's very good for you, has the essential oils you need, and is low in carbs!

Almonds and peanuts are also pretty high in fiber!

I have no problem choking down Metamucil every morning..but I buy the Equate (Wal-Mart brand) sugar-free version of it.

BeneFiber works at my house - My little guy has problems, and I even put it in his juice and milk in smaller quantities, and it is undetectable. You can mix it in liquids, or things like yogurt etc. It is not gross at all!

Bran cereal fills the fiber bill for me! Of course, I'm not on Atkins, so it fits into my program (eating healthy/sensibly). If you can, get it from your natural diet, not from pills or powder. It's SOOO much better for you!
