How do you clean marble?

I have a large piece of marble that looks like it was meant for a church alter where the communion is kept. We got it for free from a marble cutting factory where they made tombstones and church pieces. They were going out of business and I think this piece was flawed somehow. We've kept it outside with garden angels around it. But now it is all green on one side from mildew and tree gunk. (technical term there) I really want to clean it up and put it on my porch where it will stay clean. Can anyone help?

All I can tell you is that we're not supposed to use anything harsh on the marble in our bathrooms. They say no comet or anything because it will scratch, so I'm too chicken to even use soft scrub. I just use murphy's oil soap and if I need to get something tough I use baking soda.

Sorry, I'm no expert -- maybe bumping this up someone who really knows what they are talking about will help you!:p

Go to the tile section of your local Lowe's or Home Depot. In the area where they sell marble tiles, you'll find a cleaning solvent.

Thanks Aunt Polly and Tina. I'm going to both places tomorrow and will see what they say.

This is by no means scientific.

Both of my bathroom has marble counter. Master bathroom, I didnt' do anything special with it. Scrub it with scrubbing bubble every week, with a regular scrub. And this one remained shiny and clean and perfect.

2nd bathroom, rarely use, but also cleaned weekly. Bought some special marble cleanser. It turned out much worse than I expected. I left a film of 'somthing' on top, and the dirt got through, so it's very tough to clean. Even though I rarely use it.

I found also that soap really affects the marble. Those soap scums in my rarely used 2nd bathroom is so hard to get rid of. It's not smooth anymore. And compare to the master room, which I only use hand soap and rainbath.

So, go figure. I'm still trying to figure out how / why / what to do. But no more soap in my house. That's for sure.

I used to use a golf ball washer to clean my marbles but then I lost them.
