How do you ask for a free room upgrade?

Can you give me an idea of what to say? I feel kind of funny asking for one. Why should I get a room upgrade for free? But it can't hurt to ask. It would be nice to get a woods view rather than a parkinglot view at WL. But I have no idea how to ask. What do you say?

Although I've stayed a number of times at Disney hotels I just never felt comfortable asking for a complimentary upgrade...especially since I am always staying at greatly discounted rates (AP discount, 'Ocala' discount, etc).

Well - I tried it this past Nov. and was able to go from a 'standard' view to a 'Savannah' view at AKL!

In retrospect - especially since it didn't cost the hotel any more money for me to be in one room or the other - I've about convinced myself to keep trying on future trips.

When I arrived at the check-in desk I got lucky, the lady checking me in was 'chatty'. I told her about how on previous trips we had mostly stayed at the Poly (a slight exaggeration) and really enjoyed it, how we had just stayed at the HRH and it had been fantastic and a tough act to follow, and how we were trying to be careful with money on this trip - but we really wanted to stay at AKL because we had heard how great it was and we were looking forward to seeing the animals.

Now - whether any of that 'bs' worked or not - or whether the nice lady would have upgraded us anyway (WDW was deserted when we visited and the hotel was not busy) I don't know. All I know is I managed to get a $265 a night room for $134 a night...

My guess is that if you visit when it isn't busy - so that the hotel has rooms open - and the upgrade won't cost them anything they will probably do it with just a little 'encouragement'. If the upgrade is actually going to cost them something they might need more 'encouragement'.

A few years ago, we stayed a night at WL-standard view. When I went out on our balcony, I looked down and there were the dumpsters! I wasn't exactly thrilled, but I figured it was just for one night. Well, what to my surprise--at night it was the perfect view of the fireworks at the MK!!! I was beautiful. What a view!! You could even see them from the beds! :D

I've never been real good at asking for free stuff for no apparant reason, but have noticed that I have gotten upgrades before just by being friendly and nice upon check-in. Course, I'm usually friendly and nice anyway, so it doesn't take much effort. I've worked the front desk at hotels, while in college, and the folks who asked for the upgrade were VERY frequently the ones who didn't get them. If they were available, I might 'suprise' folks with them, but the ones that asked always seemed like they were 'expecting' it. LOL....When you go out for dinner tonight, imagine asking the waiter as soon as he gets to your table if you can have a free appetizer. If you feel comfortable doing that, by all means, ask for the upgrade

Like Bob, I wouldn't feel comfortable asking for free stuff. One trip to WL we got upgraded from a woods view to a courtyard view without asking. :) It wasn't a busy time of year, though.

I plan on trying it on our trip in 4 days for our 1 night stay at AKL. I figure if they not full it can't hurt to ask and if they can't do it then they'll say their not able.... I figure we can only win if we ask...:D

Last Feb 2001 we stayed at Y&B for the first time. We chatted with the CM and did ask for a room that was easy to walk to since I was pregnant (32 weeks, kinda pushing it, 8 weeks away from the due date!!!)

The CM asked if it was our first time. When we said yes they said that they had upgraded our room. We had a great water view and just loved it. To me there apeared to be a conection between it being out first time. You know Dinsey making the trip magical. (therefore making you want to come back.) It is smart for any Hotel to give these upgrades if the rooms are avilable, it lets you see how great they are and consider paying for it next time.

In short I think I might always say it is my first time!

I have faxed in my request in March, for a pool/water view at CBR. We were down there for our daughters b-day. I didn't mention in when we checked in. When we arrived back to the resort, i was very happy and surprised on the room we got. It was great!

I figure that if in the future I will fax in a request and go from there. As my dad has always said, it doesn't hurt to ask..

When my Mom & I took a mother-daughter trip six months before my wedding, we paid for a water-view room at POR (then DxL). We wanted a river view, but knew that water view also could mean a view of a pool. So, a few days before we arrived, I faxed the resort. I explained that this was a last, special mother-daughter trip before my wedding, and my mom's first time staying on site (she had previously only been to WDW for a couple of days when my dad had a business trip in Orlando, and they were staying at the Marriott). I made it very clear that I knew they couldn't guarantee a river view, but that I would greatly appreciate anything they could possibly do to make our trip as special as possible. I really tried to emphasize the fact that they would be doing me a huge favor if they could assign us a river view room. I had also requested a particular building - Magnolia Terrace, because we wanted to stay in the Mansions, it had a good location, and it was a nonsmoking building. While this wasn't exactly a request for an upgrade, because we had paid for water view, it was a request for a very particular type of water view room, in a specific building, and they didn't have to honor the request.

Imagine my surprise when my telephone rang at home that night, and it was the room assigner at POR! She just wanted to tell me that she really enjoyed my letter, and that she was assigning us a very nice room with a river view. She warned us that it may not be ready when we arrived, but if we didn't mind waiting until later in the day/evening for our room, it would be ready. She also mentioned that sghe didn't usually do this, but she liked what I had said in my letter about this being our last mother-daughter trip before my wedding.

When we checked in a few days later, we were told by the CM at the desk that the room we had been assigned wasn't ready, so we could either take a different room, or wait for ours to be ready. We said we would gladly wait. We got our room keys & passes, and headed off to Epcot for the afternoon. When we returned to the resort that evening, we called the front desk to verify that our room was ready, and it was, so we went on in. It turned out to be a river view, corner room on the second floor of Magnolia Terrace. Nice view of the river, and the benefit of a corner view room was that we had two windows instead of just one.

I've been rambling, but the point of all this is that they way you ask is very important. It's great if you have a special event or reason behind the trip - birthday, anniversary, etc. Also, be humble. Always emphasize that you know they may not be able to help you, but anything they could do would be greatly appreciated - as someone else mentioned, people are more likely to give you what you want if you don't act like you expect it, or like they have to. I think if you can make the CM feel they they would be doing you a huge favor, and really making your trip fantastic, they are more likely to see what they can do for you.
