How do you all DO it?

We bought into the DVC three years ago, and that has enabled us to take about three trips per year. It is a mortgage for us, but we bought an affordable amount of points, and when it is paid off, we will have free lodging, other than annual dues, until 2042. Works for me, I'll be 95 by then, and will have passed it on to my kids and grandkids.:D We always buy AP's, the regular ones, not the premium, and the cost is the same as a 7day park hopper, but is good for a full year. We usually stagger buying them throughout the year, so not paying all at once. Plus our kids are older, so only have to dish out for the 18yo. The older two buy their own. One trip/year is with all the kids, and the other two just my husband and I. We don't make a ton of money, but we also don't go out much. We watch movies on cable, eat out minimally, (DH is a fabulous cook, so I'm spoiled), don't spend much on clothes, are happy with our "lived in" furniture, and save all our change. DH has quite a bit of frequent flyer miles, so sometimes have a free airfare for one of us. We ALWAYS fly. I can't justify my discomfort for a 16 hour drive, when I can be in Florida in two hours by plane. But, I would drive if that was the only way I could go. I search for great airfares, sometimes I spend hours on the internet searching for flights. We always make a grocery stop on the way from the airport, for breakfast items and snacks, soda, etc. Also, I usually don't use my DVC points for Friday and Saturday nights, as they are double points, but get an AP rate and pay cash for those nights. DH had a sales meeting in Orlando last May, and I tagged along, we stayed at AKL on an AP rate, and DH's company paid for those nights, and the other nights we stayed at VWL on DVC. DH has another sales meeting in two weeks in Clearwater, and of course, I'm tagging along again, staying at CBR for the first time on AP rate, DH's company will pay for the two nights of the conference, and we'll pay the other three. Fortunately for me, DH's company is based in Minnesota, and the "bosses" like to get away from the cold, so always schedule at least one of their quarterly meetings in Florida, close to WDW. They don't care if DH stays at WDW with me and commutes to the meetings. The one in Orlando was close, but DH will have to commute 1 1/2 hours for this one. I offered that he could stay overnight in Clearwater, but he said no way, he is driving back to spend the night with me!!;) So that is how we go to WDW more than once a year.:D

We have annual passes so get AP discounts on rooms and use the discounts on meals as well. We try to eat our big meal at lunch to save money.

I also try to purchase tickets and rooms when they go on sale and most times they are paid for by the time we leave. I don't buy a lot of souvenirs so that saves $$.

We own DVC now, but we still look for good ap rates for those quickie trips.

We just went down for a quick trip and told ourselves we would plan a budget and stick to it:

Jet Blue airfare $79 each way,
AKL AP rate of $124.00 including tax,
9 days car rental with codes and coupons - $184.00.

What actually happened:

Upgraded our car for another $35.00. That Cavalier looked way too small.

Upgraded to AKL Concierge (I can't bear to write the numbers). We ended up with four adults in the room so we thought it would be worth it just on saved money for breakfasts. We loved it no matter what it cost.

We have decided that our WDW vacations are a priority for us right now...until we get sick of it. I am already planning our next vacation to WDW in April and we just got home last night!

We don't go into debt for vacations (no charges).

I think this is why we are able to enjoy our trips so much. We're careful with what we spend and I'm happy to say I haven't had a credit card in over 14 years :sunny: princess:

My daughter however.. well that's a different story :jester:

I am like CarolA, I'm single with a job. WDW is my retreat. I go there perhaps once a month just to be somewhere that allows me to forget about the rest of the world. Most of my trips are just for long weekends. I don't live near WDW but the plane fare is not very expensive.

Obviously I have an AP. I became a DVC member in 2002 when I realized I was going to keep on going.

This year I'm starting with a Universal AP so I have somewhere else to go and hang around.

We just got back from 5 days of Disney a couple weeks ago. That was our first real vacation in 10 years. I see many of you go at least once, and sometimes multiple times a year. How do you DO it? Do you save, save, save on everything else? Do you always stay value? Drive instead of fly? Live withing walking distance? Is this the one and only vacation destination for your family? Did you win the lottery? Is your last name Disney... or Eisner? LOL! But seriously, any tips to make this a more frequent occurrence for us common folk?

Well, we live in MA and are DINKS, Double Income No Kids. The way some people go to Aruba once or twice a year we go to Disney. I plan in advance come up with a "budget" for the trip and then we charge the trip to earn miles or points and then pay it off in full when the bill comes in. We then use those miles and or points towards our next trip. Sometimes our "budget", AKL Concierge with the two special safaris, is not really a budget but I had the money saved. I do look for the best deal possible at the deluxe resorts. Realtively speaking of course. Some people would not consider $277 a night inc tax for a room at the AKL Concierge a good deal. We do. We have been able to go twice a year right now but I am hoping to get that up to three.

Like I said we work hard, already own the home that we want to stay in until we retire, and I have about 34 more years to go before I do that, and after 10.5yrs of marriage we are childfree by choice. So I look at it as we work hard we send the max to our 401Ks so we are taking care of the future and we are enjoying the rest.

We use our credit card for everything from gas to groceries to vacations. We pay it off every month so we have no CC debt either. We are single income with 3 kidsanda SAHM but I don't know what the abbrevation for that is though!

Me and my sons LOVE going to Disney. DH puts up with us. We try to go once a year. We are in upstate New York so air is always our largest expense. But, by using codes and lots of other tips and tricks, we really can't go anywhere else as cheap. I spent more money in Toronto and we drove.

One year we bought annual passes. It was cheaper than the length of stay for eight days. And, it got us a great room rate.

We went back 51 weeks later and didn't have to pay for passes for the week because of the ap. That saved $1300 for a family of four.

We always ask if they need to bump anyone when we check into the airport for our flight. It works sometimes... another $1000+ saved!

Actually only one goes with me all of the time. I have a 20 y/o DD that lives on her own now and has to work. :) I have a 15 y/o DS that hates WDW so I leave him home with his dad who really can't stand WDW any more then every 5 years or so. So that leaves my 5 y/o DD that goes with me all the time. I also drag my mom with us as she is also a Disney freak. Just us girls living the good life at WDW!

I can totally relate! :happy1:

When we were planning my DD's wedding last year, Hubby and I offered to give her a dream to remember by marrying at WDW. The thing is, she's been there so often that she's tired of it now :( Maybe the "magic' will return if she has children of her own.. but for right now, she's taking a pass on trips there.

Oh well... we still love it and we'll continue to go princess: :sunny:

I'm not as blessed as many here are on the DIS to travel to Disney as much. My last trip was almost 3 years ago and won't be again til 2006! :faint: :worried: That's why I enjoy our trips so much when we're there and plan my tushy off with different things to do so DH and I can really enjoy ourselves. :cool1: Our next trip will be for 7 days and 6 nights and I'm still debating on if I want to do Universal or not. I'll make that decision in 2005 as that's when I'll begin saving for our trip.
I live here in FL and can travel to Disney anytime I want, but DH and I are so busy with our ministry as well as our "other" jobs! :D
I just feel blessed to be able to go to Disney at all, because I've spoken to many who have NEVER been and don't know if they ever will. DH's mom hasn't been to Disney in years, and I mean since she was in her 20's...she's 50+ now...so I'm going to have to figure out how to get her back soon!! :happy1:

For us, WDW is our one big vacation of the year. We can comfortably afford one big vacation a year, and this is where we choose to take ours. When you have little kids, WDW is the only logical choice! (to me anyway!;) ) Honestly, we choose to go there because there is something for everyone in our family to enjoy. We had started entertaining the thought of going somewhere else now that ds is getting old enough to enjoy different things, but now that #2 is on the way, it looks like we'll get a few more years out of WDW after all!:D

Honestly though, we won't comfortably be able to do 2 big trips a year (we always do a week at the beach, but that is only a 2 1/2 hour drive for us!) When we do decide vacation elsewhere (hopefully skiing!) we will have to skip Disney that year--unless we win the lottery!

Dh and I started taking our children to Disney with us since the summer of '00. Since then we have returned every summer. We have always stayed at the Epcot deluxes, which we just love:love1: Last year we added Universal to our vacation and are doing so again this year.:goodvibes We like staying at the Portofino Bay Hotel, and love front of the line access.

How do we do it? I often ask myself that question. We save a certain amount every month. Whatever extra income we manage to bring in also goes toward the savings. Sometimes, we'll have family give us Disney Dollars in leiu of gifts at Christmas and on birthdays for only my husband and I. (Whatever we need for ourselves we usually just go and get it when we need it.) I don't think we live real 'high on the horse', but we certainly don't skimp during the year at all. We both work really hard, and feel that we need to splurge:crazy: on ourselves at least once a year.

Also, for the family and friends that say "Disney, again...." I say"Oh yes, we love it!:hyper: It suits all of our vacation needs. There is so much to do at Disney World, we still have yet to do it all! And every year they are adding more stuff. Can't beat that anywhere." Then I tell them how we now stay concierge, then that's too much info then their eyes start to glaze over and they ask, "What's concierge?":faint:

That's why I'm always hanging around on these boards. I have to be around all the other Disney enthusiast who really get it.;)

BOY....ain't that the truth!!!!!!!!!:wave2:

I really get tired of people saying....."Don't you ever go anywhere else?"

Well, yes we do. But it just isn't the same or as much fun!:teeth:

We spent 4 days at Niagara Falls a few years ago....and to be honest.....it ended up costing us MORE that the 7 days we spent at WDW that year! and wasn't nearly as much fun.

For me the "beach scene" can get really old after about 3 days.
We spent 5 days at Ocean City and I was so bored after the 3rd day!!! There are only so many times you can walk up and down the boardwalk or shop at those "rip-off" places, or rent a boogie board. I get bored just laying on the beach!! I couldn't wait to get home to start planning the next WDW trip.

No matter what we end up spending.....it is worth every penny!::yes::

You know what too.....
Places like the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone Park...and other "land marks" or historical interest places.....
Well those are kind of once in a life time things.....

Kinda like....once you've been there.....no real need to go back...
the Grand Canyon isn't going to change in the next hundred years!

At WDW.....things are ever-changing! There is always something new!! When we were there back in 2001 and saw Mission Space getting started.....we already had plans to go as soon as it opened!
Now we can't wait to go and see the new attraction at Animal Kingdom......whether it is 2005 or 2006...we will be there.

Yet, it is nice to see somethings never change (like It's A Small World). And still have that feeling of "going home!!"

And we still have all the extra things to do that we would be doing at places like Myrtle Beach.....miniature golf, boat and bike rentals. We can even see a movie if the weather is horrible......just like we would do at many of the other resorts that other people go to.

BUT the great thing is......it is all in one place!! WDW!:hyper:
So we can see Mickey and Friends at the same time!!!

I can't think of any other place I would rather vacation at! ::yes::

hehehe.. so true, so true!! :sunny:

My Parents took my sister and I all across North America since the age of 2. We've pretty much seen all the "big spots" (and some not so big lol). Once I saw Mt. Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, etc. I pretty much committed them to memory ;)

Ziggie, at least you can say you've seen "the biggies." When I was a kid we just went to Disney. I grew up in New Jersey but don't recall doing NYC, Philly or even Washington, DC. Never did Nantucket or Maine... but every summer we were in Florida! I thought my parents were nuts, but now I am doing the same thing... I can't see wasting precious "Disney Dollars" -- the vacation fund -- on a rock or battlefield... I know I am awful but I always think "Well that's what Discovery or Travel Channel is for!"

I will never get tired of WDW!

I have been taking my family to WDW two and three times a year for the past 18 years. Back then we started a direct deposit account just for our trips. It was tough at first, but then you forget that the money is there until it's time to pay for the trip. I you make it important enough- then anything is possible. We are still going two times a year, but now we have added DCL !! And that's a whole new addicition !! Where there's a will- there's a way !!

LOL...we did this too!~We took 38 days, and trekked across the entire county (one big circle!). We began w/Grand Canyon...then to N'awlins, and WDW, up the coast on I95 to the "SOUTH OF THE BORDER" stop (for some fireworks...hehe), up though all the other sites, to D.C., NYC, and then Waterbury VT. (Ben & Jerry's...that's a Natl. monument...right?!?), and up to Maine and some Clam bakes on the beach, to Niagara and the Maid of the Mist ride, over through the Badlands, Sturgis and Mt. Rushmore, and Yellowstone! Then, headed right down PC1 to our home in So. Cali. It was a great adventure, but we STILL insisted on the stop at WDW between N'awlins and the Eastern Seaboard. :teeth: I also did this journey more than once as a child. Had so much fun, and visited beautiful places like PIKES PEAK in Colo, Wildwood & Jackson (Six Flags) N. J., Mackinac Island in Michigan, the Amish and Mennonites in Pa. and other awsome/fun locales.

YET...WDW still holds the MOST intrigue for us. We have been there a ZILLION times, and spend nearly the entire summer there. We still feel as though we have NOT seen/done everything! Each summer, there is always some new "THEME", and some new reason to celebrate. The elaborate & new horticulture (which changes frequently) is nearly enough in itself to keep us returning.

There is always something more, much more. There is US...our family...in the past. We have left behind our three "shadows" which live eternally in all the parks and resorts. There is US, more than 14 years ago, romping and singing behind the MK parade at closing. There is US, riding together on the old straw-filled wagon in FW, to see the Electrical water pageant...sitting close and holding hands. There is US, screaming together in delightful unison...as we PLUNGE down the falls on Splash mountain. There is US....riding and laughing, on the old "DELTA DREAMFLIGHT" attraction. And so...it goes. Nearly infinitely...holding our "YOUTH", and dreams...hopes...safely forever in the nooks and crannies of all which is WDW. By the lights of the setting sun, and the soft amber glow of the streetlights, these shadows continually follow us around each summer we return, each visit. If I turn back fast enough, I can sometimes catch a glimpse of DD, holding her father's hand for safety/security...and looking up in innocent wonderment. Her shadow is small, her features fragile and tender. The world still so new. My heart soars and my soul is lifted whenever I am fortunate enough to see these visions of yesteryears. For me, it remains the strongest force which calls us back. A place our past is secure and constant.

Thank you, BAMBI for starting this thread. It has offered a wonderful place for all of us passionate about WDW, to share our "connections" and reasoning behind the near "necessity" to return. The MAGIC of WDW...is alive and well. It's always there...waiting, a mere car~ride, or plane trip around the corner. Just knowing this...offers me contentment beyond description.

We do at minimum 3 vacations a year, not all Disney since we want to see other things also. I use hotel points, airline miles, credit card points, Priceline, and always keep my eye out for specials. We are headed to Phoenix in two weeks - used Priceline for the hotel and bought the plane tickets with an Alaska Airlines credit. I got the credit because I purchased tickets, with a work bonus, to Orlando for our April Disney spring break. I watched the Alaska Airlines site like a hawk and when the price went down 100.00 per ticket, I jumped on it and used that credit towards the Phoenix tickets. Went over to Hawaii in early November, low season when things are cheaper all around - used airline miles for the plane ticket on Northwest combined with cash - tickets were just 248.00 a piece. And found a great deal at the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island - they were renovating so got a great room for half price.

For our April Disney trip, I booked the CSR for 116.00 per night AP rate and used Hotelkingdom.com for our 2 day RPH at Universal stay. Searched for the lowest rental car using Sidestep and currently have two reserved - an SUV and a 7 passenger van. Will cancel one depending on whether my sister joins us. And by the way, also combined this with an Entertainment book discount.

Now I'm working on our 15th wedding anniversary December trip. Chose the 3 day Dec 16 DCl cruise - much cheaper on a per day per person basis than the Dec 19 cruise - we still get to cruise but for less money. And, will arrive at WDW on Dec 19 - last day for value season rates but those rates will be good for our entire 4 day stay.

Where there's a will there's a way and half the fun is planning and feeling like I got something for next to nothing. It is a priority for us - we call it family therapy " :D " I have an intense job and my husband is a stay at home dad - vacations help us keep our sanity and re-connect. There's no place like Disney to forget one's cares and have real family time.
