How do they test for heartworm?

Our little Lucy (pup) gets her first heartworm testing tomorrow morning. How do they do it?

They will just draw some blood from her leg, similar to people getting blood drawn for a blood test. Our dogs had this done every time they got their check up.

How old is your puppy? My vet said that pups under one year don't need to be tested because the the maturation rate of the heart worms. Also, if your dog is on heart worm preventative year-round, you only have to test every other year.

Lucy will be a year old next week (time flies). I guess we will find out tomorrow.
