How about all these big sales going on before Christmas?
We went to J.C.Penney's yesterday and spent $366.00 on clothes for the whole family. Between the sales, the clearance prices and the 20% off coupon for 'hometown heroes , we saved $349. Or over 50% before taxes:eek:

How much mark up is there on clothing? These were not leftovers but current fashions.

Our Michigan Penney's has a sale every week. Usually 25% off and more with coupons I get in the mail. I think they are like some other chain stores right now. Struggling to stay afloat.
Congratulations on the great discounts you received!:D

Clothing is marked up tremendously high... I do shopa t places like Forever 21 and you do get what you pay for... I paid $19 bucks for this sweater and it is almost falling apart but I've gotten good wear out of it and it was so cheap I can afford to go buy something more in style. So sometimes you get what you pay for...other times you pay a ridiculous amount of money for something for the name on it and it still falls apart.... it's all in the name.... sigh.

(flattered to be an inspiration!)

I agree with you though. Kohl's in particular has been giving stuff away this year. They had juniors sweaters on the clearance rack for about $6-8.00. Then they had an extra 50% off clearance, plus another 20% off coupon. I bought my daughter some really cute sweaters there for $2.70! They were not rejects either, they were definitely still in style. Also, Carsons had huge sales on Black Friday with 50-60% off just about everything, plus coupons for an extra 20% off. I paid about $32 for an $80 Columbia ski jacket for my son. I just don't see how they are making much of a profit.

I know that higher end retailers mark up clothes well over 100%, knowing that most people will wait for sales.

Yes, I am sure that the markup on clothing is pretty high.

I have to wonder about that as well.

My mom worked in the accounting department at a Sears a long time ago (before I was born). She says that they get to write off the amount they lose when they put clothes on sale. So although it may not help their income, it reduces their tax burden. Plus, if you remember that you went to Penny's or Kohl's or whereever and got a great bargain, you're more likely to start there the next time you need something.

I worked in a retail clothing store and 100% mark-up was the minimum. Usually it was 100% + some pre-set dollar amount. i.e. Sweaters were marked-up 100% + $10.00. Knowing this I refuse to pay retail for clothes.:)

I work for a children's wear rep at the apparel mart and the retailers we work with mark up clothing a minimum of 60%. Ugh - I don't like to pay full-price for clothes ever especially when I can get some of the higher dollar things at the retailers cost at the market. The man I work for also gives me a lot of clothes for DD.
