Good question! I dont have an answer really but Im betting they are soaked in something.. Hopefully boiled! :teeth:

They are soaked/dipped in some sort of disinfecting solution. There is a faint "smell" of the disinfectant on them.

You can tell they use some strong stuff. When we went to return our equipment last trip you could smell the strong smell of some sort of disinfectant.

They soak the masks and snorkels in a very strong disenfectant for 15 minutes and then in boiling water for another 10 minutes. It is very sanitary!!! Not to worry.

Eek...I still dont know if I would put my mouth on it after someone else had. There should be some sort of throw-away plastic mouthpiece or something. Im kinda dissapointed now, cause I really wanted to do Shark Reef. :sad1:

Ever use the silverware at a restaurant?;)

They disinfect them very well...nothing to worry about.

When we were there several years ago we only saw the portion where they do a little rinsing and figured that was it. This is like passing through a restaurant kitchen - there are some things you are better off not knowing and assume they know what they are doing.

In the pool I was apparently drifting at an angle and did not go straight across. A CM yelled at me in order to correct my direction miscalculation. My son thought this was the best part of our trip. He was very surprised that a Disney employee would get angry and yell at a guest. But if it was to straighten out Dad - this was very acceptable.

The next morning I happened to be sick to my stomach. We blamed the mouthpiece. I really don't know if the mouthpiece was the cause but the timing made it a convenient excuse.

Now when I get out of line my wife offers to send me to the Shark Reef for lessons.

You can go by your local scuba shop and buy your own mouthpiece (or your own snorkle for that matter). Beware they are not going to be Wal-Mart prices. Have fun - I can't wait until DD is old enough to do this!

Disney requires if you are going on the shark reef to use the equipment they provide for you. Sorry you can't use outside equipment.
