I have a friend who was nice enough to donate her old diaper genie to me. I bought a refill for it but can't figure out how to install it. It has two directions but it doesn't help me. I pulled the plastic up and made a knot and tucked it down through the middle, then I put in a diaper and shut the lid. I turned the handle and opened the lid and the diaper was still there and not twisted. I closed the lid and turned it a few more times but nothing happened. What am I doing wrong? Also, what is the button on the top with scissors on it?

The Diaper Genie is a cool concept unfortunately it's not an easy thing to operate. The plastic would keep getting jammed or the thing wouldn't twist the plastic right and the cutter wouldn't cut the plastic. I was so frustrated I just tossed the thing out to the curb. I bought a different type that doesn't require so much work.

It was nice of her to give it to you. Unfortunately I didn't mess around with it much to remember how to operate it. I hope it works out for you better than it worked out for me.

Good luck!

Not to sound stupid, but did you push the diaper down 5-6 inches, then twist? The scissors thing is supposed to be when the diaper genie is full, then it cuts the plastic film for you, so all you have to do is tie a new knot. My scissors thingy has never worked right, so I just use a regular pair of scissors. I do overall like the diaper genie and have used it for both kids.

You have to push the diaper down far enough that it sort of "clicks" into a little thing. Like a little claw type piece. Then you close the lid and twist. When you put the next diaper in, the first one will move down into the bottom of the receptacle.

When it gets full you hold down the scissor button and twist, and it will cut the plastic so you can empty the diapers out. Theoretically. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. The plastic has to be taut or the scissor button won't work.

I wanted a Diaper Genie so much when I had my DS, I didn't get one at my shower. A few months after my DS was born I went out and got one. I hated that thing!

It was just easier to put the diaper in the garbage, my garbage went out everyday anyway. If it was a real dirty diaper I would put it in a plastic bag tie and and throw it out.

But I do know people that love their Diaper Genie, it was nice of her to give it to you.

WOW....they still make Diaper Genies??
I had one for my dd who is now almost 15 years old!! I loved it, we lived on the second floor condo at the time and it just wasn't easy to throw a yucky diaper away at the time.
By the time #2 and #3 came along we were in a house and I just threw them in the garbage can outside.

Ah-Ha!!!! I remember seeing the claw thing and no I didn't push the diaper down into it. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try that!
