As you can guess we are booking our first cruise! I know we want a verandah but other than that how do I decide which stateroom to book? which floor, which category, etc? There will be two adults and one child.

It's a personal choice. The more you spend the more you get to a point. If you have never sailed I would recommend mid ship on a higher deck with a balcony if you can. You can then decide if you need more or less " cabin " or can tolerate more movement or noise. Does that help at all?

Check the stateroom reports on this board. Check the deck plans and see where things are on board. It's really your comfort level. If you're on the ship it's a great cabin :)

Yes, that definitely helps, I've been reading all the individual room reports but I was looking for a general rule on location (like mid ship, etc.) Thanks so much!
Oh, one more question, so if I book the category for the room can I pick the specific room number?

Yes, your travel agent (which I recommend b/c many offer on board credit) can get you the room you want if available. I want to say you can also do it on DCL but it has been a while since I booked directly.

PP mentioned midship, higher up with balcony (verandah) to see if you need more or less cabin. Word to the wise, you will never need "less", if you can afford a verandah go for it. We LOVE having it. BUT you will have a hard time not having one after trying it. I would try a porthole for a first cruise unless money's no object.

Oh, and best advice? Start saving now for the next cruise that you'll book onboard this one :goodvibes:goodvibes

Thanks for the info.. I think we are going to do our best to save enough for a verandah. I tend to be a little claustrophobic and I feel slightly panicked about not having fresh air. It may be a small price to pay for me to feel relaxed!

OP, when you select your cabin, remember that you should look at the floor plan for the decks immediately above and immediately below your cabin. You probably want to avoid a cabin above/below, or right next to a large public venue. People feel differently about nearness to stairs and elevators on ships, some see them as a convenience, others worry about noise. If you are worried about seasickness, the usual advice is to get a cabin in the midships area, closer to the level of the sea, for less movement.

So true! We had a port hole on our first cruise, and enjoyed it. Then we saw photos from a friend's cruise, when she had coffee on her verandah. We upgraded for our next cruise and LOVED it! Can't imagine cruising without it now.

Napped through the stay at Nassau, on the chairs on our verandah. And enjoyed breakfast on it a couple days!

Enjoy!
