Sorry. Total newbie to this concept.

How do you figure out how many points you need?

Thanks.

The major points rental sites have calculators in dollars and points. Put in your dates and it tells you each resort, from studios to villas

Get the phone app, "DVC Calculator". You can quickly look up how many points you need for your typical stay with that (same as looking it up in the charts but way easier to explore "what if's" with the App).

OP's are suggesting you use the rental calculators as a tool to estimate your point requirements. Keep in mind that there are sometimes changes in point requirements from year to year in the same week so be sure to factor extra points into your calculation. You can always bank them forward if you have excess.

Yes, PPs are correct. Figure out what you think your routine use would be and then calculate the number of points needed at each resort you’re interested in. For instance, we wanted enough points for Thanksgiving week in a 2 bedroom villa. Then add 10-20% to allow for reallocations of the points charts and changes to your habitual visits.

You can spend hours trying to figure out how many points you will need to purchase, but this also includes trying to figure out your vacation needs years from now...not an easy task. As a general rule most studios cost about 18-20 points per night so if you are looking for 7 nights then you will need 140 points(annually) for a weeks vacation at WDW. A 1-bdrm will cost you double or about 280 points.
If your plans are to stay over the Xmas holidays then add a 75% premium on those point rates.
We have 150 points but we seldom visit over holiday or school vacation periods so we can stretch our points to over 10 days annually or bank and borrow for a 7 day 1-bdrm visit.

THE DVC RESOURCE CENTER - Updated JANUARY, 2020 - has DVC point charts for all of the DVC Resorts for 2020 and 2021.

That information is updated whenever the point charts are released for the next year - along with information about each DVC resort, annual Maintenance Fees, etc.

You should get your post count up to 10 so you will be able to use 'Conversation' (PM) to share private information here on the DIS with the DVC Member you find to assist with your reservation. HOW TO USE the DISboards PRIVATE CONVERSATION SYSTEM (PM)

Good luck with your rental! :)

You don't rent points. You "rent" the reservation. Points are worthless to you if you are not a DVC owner.

The truth of the matter is you will never have enough points. And this thing is dam addictive. DVC saves you nothing because you’ll end up going more! But check out the point charts and convert your normal stay into points.. then add 10-20% for seasonal changes.
