The people who lived in our house before us blocked in one corner of our bedroom to build a false fireplace. It looks okay, but the room is really too small and after 15 years I would rather have the space to work with.

Here's the thing.... he used real brick and mortar! The brick part is about 4 feet high. The mantle and above the mantle is made of wood and paneling, I should be able to rip that out easily. But I have no idea how to go about demolishing the brick part or what tools I'll need for the job.

Any ideas? Has anyone ever done something like this?

we are talking about a three story apartment house.....we did it one brick at a time.......we had a chisel and put it between the mortar....sometimes the old motar will just break apart when you tap the chisel .....do it ever so gently

On TV they used a sledge hammer on THIS Old House...I have never done it though.

How about calling a brick mason or a contractor. They might have some ideas for you.

If you do it your self - be sure to cover everything in plastic before starting and wear masks over nose and mouth and wear safety type glasses - it is hard work - you can start with sledge hammer and go from there with - also a crowbar works too

us ladies all want to use a sledge hammer on someone........way to go ladies......hahaha
