We'll be staying for a week, so I will have quite a few lancets and syringes from my son's insulin. I usually put them in a Coke bottle, but where can I leave them? I was guessing maybe at the first aid stations, but I can't imagine carrying them around to bring them there.

Sorry for such a dumb question :upsidedow

Definitely not a dumb question. I have no clue but just wanted to say not a dumb question.

ETA: Because I was curious I read the FAQs and then went to Allears info and found this -

Call Mousekeeping for a Sharps Jar

Housekeeping at your hotel, AKA Mousekeeping if it is Disney hotel, will give you a sharps jar/container for your protection and theirs. Just pick up the phone and give them a call.

The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin request you call security for a sharps container. They ask that you call security again when you are ready to check out so they can retrieve the container.

I guess Doc must have been in charge as in August 2006, the All Stars gave us a “real” sharps container not the Dopey little thing the DCL was handing out, it is just Goofy anyone would try to use a sharps jar that the pokies can poke through. Also when we asked for a refrigerator at All Star Music we got a small refrigerator not the tiny meds cooler that some people have reported round about the internet. (YDDICRMV - Your Disney Diabetes Insulin Cooling Refrigerator May Vary)

The BadShoe crew has found that great sharps jars can be made from plastic Coke or water bottles. They are fairly tough and odds are you have one around.

Those do work in a pinch, but sharps containers should be rigid plastic that a needle can't poke through for safety. So, it is better to ask for one at the resort. For outside the resort, some people bring a small safe container with them and bring their sharps back to the resort. They do have sharps containers in First Aid at the parks.
(I have to say that, I am an RN and an Infection Control Specialist in 'real life'; I don't play one on TV). ;)

We do have the information in the FAQs, but probably not in the most transparent places to find. I will edit to put it more out there.

I will always put the cap back on a used syringe so the needle is not exposed. When I remove the needle from a pen it is automatically placed in its shield. I will then put the syringe and the shielded pen needle into an empty water bottle with the label removed. At the end of my stay I will put this bottle in the middle of the desktop; not only is everything in the bottle but there is a secondary layer of protection as all needles are individually capped.

Since I use a Frio Cold Pack also, I will put my used syringes/needles back in the pack after use at a restaurant and transfer them to the water bottle when I get back to my room. I can tell if they are used or not as I will discard the plunger cap from a syringe when I use it or throw away the paper seal from a pen needle.

We just returned from staying at BCV with our newly diagnosed (type 1) DD. We called mousekeeping as soon as we arrived and they delivered a small sharps container to our room. They were very prompt. When we were leaving we asked mousekeeping what to do with it and they said leave it in the room and they would take care of disposing of it.

Thank you all for the help. It's funny the things I seem to worry about as this trip gets closer... :lmao:

I use pretty much the same disposal method as Cheshire Figment - I re-cap syringes and the pen needles are automatically back in their shield when removed. I then put them in a plastic water bottle. Another container that works well if you have a beer drinker in the family is the beer Disney sells in plastic bottles at the resort stores. When I am ready to check out, I leave the container where it is clearly visible.

I know that I could call housekeeping for a sharps container but I never think of it until I am ready to dispose of a needle!

In the park, I usually only have pen needles. I just put the used one back in the wristlet I use to carry the fresh needles and extra lancets, etc. When I go back to the room I put the used sharps in my container.

For now, he still has regular syringes for Lantus and pen needles for Novolog. Hopefully by the time we go, he'll have the Omnipod.

PatsMom - where in NH are you? We're in the Lakes Region.

Jen, I am in the White Mountains. Very near Storyland. I commute to Bedford NH (near Manchester) two to three days per week, staying with my mother in Rochester on the nights I have to be at my office.

Type I is tough - especially with a little one. Is the Omnipod a pump? I've read good things about them. I am Type II but was young when I got it. I had gestational diabetes at 31 and was one of the lucky few who didn't revert to normal after delivery.

I have a great educator in Hampton. Before I found Judy my control was kind of hit or miss.

The Lantus comes in a Solostar pen which is very convenient but I used the regular syringes for a long time because my prescription plan charged a higher co-pay for the pens.

That's a commute and a half!

He is still using Lantus with syringes, because most of his dose changes are 0.5 units. The Solo Star pen can only do a full unit. His Novolog is a junior pen, as that will do the 0.5 unit doses.

The Omnipod is a newer type of pump - instead of having the pump connect to a tubing set, and then to the actual site, it's all in one. Therefore there's no tubing (a plus with a 2 year old ;) ) The pod is run by a remote control meter, which I could carry so he won't have the expensive part with him.
