My DH insist on wearing jeans in the summer heat/humidity of FL when we go to WDW. It makes me hot and sweaty just looking at him in those jeans in the heat. He says he doesn't want to wear shorts unless his legs are tanned but he even refuses to wear shorts to cut the grass so how on earth are his legs EVER going to get tanned???:sad2: He also won't use the self tanning products. :headache: Also walking around in those jeans in the heat he looks like a dork !!

Any suggestions on how I might get him out of those jeans and into some shorts for our vacation? :confused3

Maybe remind him that no one is going to Disney to scope out his legs!! Bring some shorts for him and he may come around after being gently poached each day.

Or maybe give him some certificates for a couple visits to a tanning booth.

Please let us know how you resolve this!

Maybe if you have a private back yard he can go out back and just sit and relax in some shorts...get those legs tan and he wont be so uncomfortable at WDW. I understand his pain, I hate it when my legs are so translucent, haha. BUT, at wdw, no one will be paying attention to his legs, hehe...too many other things to look at! ;)

You don't! He is an adult and he can do what he wants, BUT I would tell him that when he has heat stroke from wearing them neither you or the kids (if you have them) are going to give up any of your park time sitting with him in first aid or the hospital, he'll be going it alone. AND he is not allowed to complain once about the heat or how hot he is, or the chafing from the sweaty legs rubbing etc. As I tell my kids if you don't want to follow my advise live with it, because I don't want to hear you complaining about what I told you not to do.

Appeal to the practicalities of luggage weight. Jeans weigh a TON, and several prs. may cause your suitcase to go over weight limit and cost you $.
They also take a LOT of quarters to dry in a hotel coin laundry. We ban them for travel unless we plan to ride horses.

Go out and get him a few prs. of zip-off active pants, the kind made of quick-dry lightweight fabric. (I noticed this morning that Cabela's is having a sale, if you shop there.) These give him the option of going to shorts without having to take 2 separate pieces of clothing; saves weight. Odds are
that no matter how embarassed he is about the color of his legs, he won't last a full day in Florida heat without going for the zippers; it will just be too easy to resist.

One more note about the "tan" thing: a tan is nothing to be proud of, and it absolutely is not *healthy* in any way. It is a sign of skin damage, and a precursor to melanoma. Better off pale.

I have to agree with Hannathy (and it seems I'm doing that a lot lately! :rotfl: ). DH is an adult...if he chooses to walk around in jeans...let him. If he complains-tell him to talk to the hand-you don't want to hear it.

As far as the tan thing...who cares? I've been blinded by people who are whiter than a sheet of paper (okay, not really)...but they are out there. And so are the folks with cellulite and every other not so attractive attribute-and they wear shorts-and nobody cares. I'm not a huge fan of shorts, but when it is sweltering hot out, I don't care and I certainly could care less what total strangers think. Maybe just buy him a pair of shorts and pack it in your suitcase-if your lucky he will relent after a day or two of sweating it out.

When I saw the title of your post, one though leaped into my gutter-dwelling brain: "Try the black satin negligee. That should do the trick!" :rotfl2:

Okay...she wants him in his shorts...not his birthday suit! :rotfl:

JK! I know what you meant...and hey, its worth a shot! :thumbsup2

I'm so glad this thread wasn't heading where I thought it might! LOL

DH has some of those hiking pants that convert to shorts. He loves them.

Otherwise let him wear what he wants and be uncomfortable.

Two of my boys have (and love) those 'convertible' pants. Though for some strange reason I'm always finding the bottom half of the legs in the dirty clothes pile, while the top half never seems to make it in . . . . . it's a laundry mystery!

At least you FIND the bottom halves of the pants! I don't know what my DS does with them, but he always seems to lose just ONE of the two bottoms. One day I am going to happen upon a pile of stray pant legs when I least expect it. :rotfl:

They will be co-habitating with the single socks that you never knew where they went either.

Get him a spray on tan the day before you go. My DD just did this for prom. Its safe and no harmful rays and he will be tanned!!

I go with, he is a grown man, you may lose this battle.

There are some things my DH does that I just simply will never be able to change.....but the reverse it true too. There are some things he would love me to do, but I just don't want to.

Suggest and forget it.

I agree that he is a grown man. I used to be the same way- no shorts because of my white legs. But when I tried layingout I wouldnt get tan. I finally started tanning at the salon. Now I wear shorts every chance I get. And I see so many grown men leaving the tanning salon- and they dont even all look gay!

Hasnt he looked around at other Disney guest! LoL Ive seen some unreal people!

I agree with Hannathy...

Im going with people that wont listen- In-Laws too!
Im not changing my plans for there stupidity! IF they are hot or miserable they can go back by themselves!

I am not really trying to change him. Normally I don't care what he chooses to wear it is just that in FL it is soooo hot, he is not use to the heat even though we live in GA he is org. from PA and even has a hard time with GA heat. Also he is a hypertensive guy (seriously takes meds for high bp) so he gets heated up quicker than avg and sweats like he is working out while just standing around. I sweat myself just looking at him in those jeans at WDW.
Self tanners- his skin for some reason does not take these very well, I have tried them on him before, they seem to settle into his pores and then he sweats them right off before they have a chance to work. not kidding
He is not one to go to a tanning bed or get a spray tan, that would be harder to get him to do than to put on the shorts :rotfl:

I personally tan easily (as does he) but i don't have a problem with my legs being pale while I tan, walking around with shorts on during the process. I guess that is what I don't understand, why he has a problem with being pale for a few days .... it doesn't faze me to do that. The way I see it is if someone has a problem with my legs being pale that is their problem. I'm fine with it. And ppl say we women are the vain ones

Oh my goodness.... Are we married to the same man?!?! My DH is exactly the same way! I worked at a salon the last time we went to Disney so I talked him into coming in and tanning a little. He sat in a chair and just put his legs in!!!:rotfl2: He did wear shorts at Disney (we went in June) but he made me put make-up on one bad vein that he has!!!Every day we had to take the time to try to cover up his vein!!!:sad2: His shorts are still hanging in the closet, never been worn since disney 3 yrs ago. He refuses to wear them even in the yard. When I tell him he would be so much cooler in shorts, he says no he's cooler in jeans cause it keeps the sun from beating down on his legs.He finally admitted while at Disney, it was cooler in shorts but I guess not cool enough to continue to wear them.

The reason I suggested the zip-off sport pants is that they are a good compromise, and will be much cooler than jeans in the heat (go with lighter colors). If he wants to stay with long trousers he can do that, but they will definitely be more comfortable than denim jeans -- he can even walk in one of the fountains and get them wet if he needs to cool off, because they will dry in just a few minutes.

My Dad *never* wore shorts, and he worked outdoors in sub-tropical heat every day. He also had skin cancer several times (he got damage on his back from the sun penetrating through his shirts) -- there is great merit to keeping the sun off with clothing if that is the method your DH prefers, but jeans are definitely NOT the most comfortable clothes in which to do it. My DH has pretty much abandoned denim altogether; he finds other fabrics much more comfortable for casual wear.

For those who really wish to stay covered but want to stay cool, there are fabrics made just for sun protection that are great. They are especially popular with the fishing crowd.
