My 9 year old is just today starting to feel sick. No serious symptoms, stuffy nose, tired, cold... We cant get flu shots. I was wondering if I shold have her tested for flu. Does anyone know what that test consists of, and how soon you should go get it? I think my doc will poo-poo me for taking her in this early, but if it were the actual FLU I'd like her to be in that window for Tamiflu or something. Thanks!

My DD's doctor did a flu test by doing a throat culture where they put the "popsicle stick" to the back of your throat to get a culture. They do the test in the doctor's office and I think it only took about 15 minutes to get the result. This is also how they test for strep throat.

For me they just check to see if I have a fever, and maybe chills, aching muscles, stuffy, runny nose, etc.. I just had a cold and I never had a fever, just sore throat, stuffy and runny nose, and sneezing. I have never had a doctor offer me or my kids anything other than maybe a decongestant and advise (stay in bed, drink a lot of liquids...) when we have had the flu. I hope your child feels better soon.

I wonder when they'll start selling at-home test kits?

When DS had the flu last year, they stuck a q-tip in his nose, so they could get it cultured.

Yeah..that was fun, lemme tell ya.

Same for my kids. It was a BIG Q-tip too and doc had to go WAY up to get the culture. I think that's the only way to find out for sure.

yep its the swab test as far as I know.

Its really starting the rounds early here. I have it. I am trying to stay away from people and working form home as much as I can. Went out for the first time today at least my fever was down.

I believe there is no "test" for flu. When they are doing throat or nose cultures (where they use a swab to collect a specimen to grow out bacteria and then see what it is sensitive to for treatment or else define it as viral if nothing grows)they are really ruling things out. If you have a bacterial cause, they use antibiotics. Antibiotics do not work on viral illnesses. Antiviral agents work on viruses like flu. They will diagnose flu by ruling out other causes (bacteria) and by looking at symptoms-high fever, cough, malaise, joint pain, nausea, vomiting etc. Flu is always accopmpanied by high fever. When a person is compromised by the flu, they can also develope a secondary bacterial infection for which the doctor may prescribe an antibiotic.(This explaines the person who will tell you how they were cured of the flu with antibiotics.....) Good things to know about flu-your county will report the occurance of flu to your state health department. That info is then available to you-usually on the state health department web site. It is a good place to check regularly, If you see increasing numbers of flu casas in your county and you start to feel punky it is a good piece of info to encourage you to seek a doctors evaluation quicker. It is still early for flu in most places, but that could change at any moment. Be alert, be aware, seek medical treatment quickly. People forget that the flu can be deadly, but with early and strong medical intervention flu can be minimized.

At work, I am an RN on a med/srug floor, we do a nasal swab for Infulenza A & B antigen, hope this helps

Actually, the nasal swab thing IS a test for flu. It's called a viral respiratory panel (VRP) and it can diagnose influenza virus A & B, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza virus 1, 2, and 3, and adenovirus.

However, my guess is that it's unlikely that the OP's child has influenza, as the onset of flu is usually very rapid and severe (sudden high fever, extreme fatigue, etc), but I am not there, and if the OP is concerned that it might be flu, she should call her child's doc. Tamiflu is recommended not only for the patient, but for the household contacts as well, and the sooner the better. :thumbsup2

OP - I hope your little one is better soon, and if you have any doubt, go get her tested. It's not fun, but at least there are no needles involved :goodvibes

Yup, I can verify, nasal swab for the flu.:thumbsup2

I have had it twice-diagnosed. And I have performed the test countless times.

So not fun. (The disease, not the test).

She has NO FEVER... so I will call the doc rather than go. See what he has to say.
If it were not for crazy killer flu threats Id not be a bit concerned about her symptoms. Sniffles. Tired. We cant get the flu shots, so by nature... I'm freaked out this time of year. THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES AND INFO!:thumbsup2

Nasal swab is the test for the flu. :thumbsup2

Anytime the flu hits and my kids get sick I get them the swab to be on the safe side.

We have taken Tamiflu before and it worked for us. It is a great way to halt the spread in your house.

When I got the flu last winter - even though I'd gotten a flu shot - the doctor did a swab thing in my nostrils. It only took about 5 minutes to confirm that I did, indeed, have the flu. I was able to start Tamiflu right away - which cut the flu down to about half of the days it would have been. Get the test quickly/soon.

What state are you in? I know we had 2 confirmed cases here in St. Louis. So it is here. :scared:

Headache and fever are the indicators.

No fever? Probably not the flu.

Hey, is it just me or does Tamiflu smell like bananas? :lmao:

I remember last year, I opened the bottle containing DS's Tamiflu and went, "Oh man..this smells so good. I hope it tastes as good as it smells!":rotfl:
