Before we were even engaged, I started on the road to weight-loss. Two months in, at the time of the big question, I had lost 10 pounds. Total by the wedding, I lost 22. Now, don't flame me, but that was all I could lose, I wanted to get out of a TIGHT 8, pushing 10, back to a 6. I wanted to do it for myself, since I had been a 6 throughout college and back then, I didn't have to try to do it either. In fact, I drank like a fish and ate fast food every day (can't do that now!).
I did a lot of research before I started, and I found the healthiest way to lose weight and make it easy to maintain was to follow a diabetic diet (which is similar to Weight Watchers) and the key is EXERCISE! Keep this in mind ladies, it is my Bible:
For every pound you weigh, you need to consume 10-12 calories to maintain it. So, I weighed 155 starting, so I needed to take in no more than 1860 calories per day. I went with the lesser at 1550. So my goal was to lose 1-2 pounds per week, with diet and excercise. 3500 calories equals one pound, so if I cut 500 calories per day (500x7=3500) from my maintenance calories, I come up with consuming 1050 per day for the first week (1550-500=1050). I would combine that with 20-30 minutes of cardio three-four times per week and 20 minutes of weights three-four times per week so that I could lose that other pound.
Now as you lose, you have to readjust your figures. Example, when I hit 153, I had to readjust 1530-500=970 per day in calories. At 140, readjust 1400-500=900.
The key is to EAT RIGHT and you will not be hungry at all. Also, don't deprave yourself of things you love. Moderation is the key. I also gave myself one "cheat day" per week, where I could consume up to 150% of my maintenance calories.
This is a great web site that measures calories in just about everything:

The process is tedious at first, but be sure to write down everything you are going to eat for the day IN ADVANCE and stick to it to ensure you don't overdo it. After a few weeks, knowing off-hand what is acceptable and not will become second-nature! Its a way of getting you back on track to a life commitment of eating healthy!
