How did you get your room upgrade?

Here's a question for everyone... If you were upgraded at check-in, was it a nice surprise, or did you ask?

We have a standard room reservation at the AKL in February. I want to ask for a possible upgrade, but I'm not sure if some CM's will be turned off by this and turn us down.

Just wondering...

Thanks!

Do you have a room with a view? Can I get a complimentary upgrade? All nice and sweet as I am, that's how I ask.;)

In May '98, my husband and I celebrated our anniversary without the kids in WDW. I had the Contemporary Garden Wing view booked for an AP rate of $152 at that time. I faxed the resort about 3 days prior to check-in and all I asked for was a Garden Wing room with a "nice water view" and added we were celebrating our anniversary. We were astonished to find we had been upgraded to the 14th floor concierge overlooking the MK ! Wine and roses were waiting in our room upon arrival. It was the best couple of days ever !
We have never been upgraded since, so this is my only experience.......and a great one at that ::yes::

Seriously, what would happen if the CM was 'turned off'?

Either they have already done the upgrade and will come out and tell you, or you have to ask - they can't read your mind. I'd say don't be afraid by what they will do. I remember asking for an upgrade on a NorthWest flight...The gate agent gal asked something to the effect of what qualified me for an upgrade (certificate, frequent flier points, elite status, etc). I answered, in my sweetest voice, "my charm and personality".:teeth: Well, I didn't get the upgrade, but I got a wonderfully off-guard smile. Oh well!

Lewski has some great suggestions that get around the 'forwardness' of asking for an upgrade. If they say no, or nothing is available, accept the fact graciously and move on.

Good Luck!

IMO, it doesn't hurt to ask. Especially at AKL where upgrades frequently occur. The worst they can say is "no" and you're in the class that you booked. When I checked into AKL in July I smiled, did and little small talk and asked "Are there any upgrades available?". We received a Savanah View!

Now ... we're spoiled and I am paying extra for the view on our next trip. {sigh}

In 20 trips to WDW, I've only asked once & was turned down because no water view rooms were available (BWI & late at night). However, last Dec. when I checked into the WL around noon with a VERY sick child (high fever, double ear infection & DIDN'T know it until we landed & spent night 1 @ the airport Hyatt), we were upgraded from wood's view to courtyard, because it was the only room clean with bunk beds & I couldn't ask my niece to share a bed with my sick daughter. So, out of necessity I was upgraded & the CM's were wonderful about everything - helping me get a doctor's appt. & ride to the clinic & moving us to POR after 1 night of a week's stay (the doctor cost a small fortune & my DD wanted to sleep with me, so 2 beds were fine & the price much better). Just ask & be sweet...:cool:

Last May at AKL, it was the CM who asked us if we wanted to upgrade our standard room to a savanah view. I asked how much they wanted and I think it was something like $65/night. I told her that was too expensive ... that I'd rather put the money towards another Disney trip :laughing: She agreed with me and said that she'd give us a complimentary upgrade :)

I agree that it never hurts to ask ... I'm sure if they have rooms available, they'll upgrade you :)

When we checked into the WL in July, the CM said that we had been upgraded to Courtyard. We had 2 rooms booked and both had been upgraded.

Just back from the Poly and the Yacht Club. We booked conc at the Poly and then were switching to the Yacht Club standard room. At check in at the YC the cm said " did you know that you have been given a complimentary upgrade to concierge?" WOW! What a nice surprise. I didn't ask any questions.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
