How did Jodi Benson get famous as Ariel in The Little Mermaid?

As a The Little Mermaid fan I always wanted to know how Jodi Benson became really famous as Ariel's voice? I read that Jodi was 27 at the time she auditioned for Ariel in The Little Mermaid after she did some work on Broadway shows and when The Little Mermaid came along Jodi jumped at the chance to audition for Ariel and she got the part and the rest is history. It's hard to believe that Jodi Benson still plays Ariel and she is still talented as Ariel. I also read that Jodi Benson has also released children's Christian music albums and has a children's video series aimed at the Christian market. Another thing i'd love to know is Jodi Benson also Robby Benson's sister?

I think Jodi Benson was perfect to provide Ariel's voice in The Little Mermaid and when you hear Ariel sing you hear a lot of Jodi's beautiful voice and it's no secret Jodi Benson was chosen to voice Ariel because little did we know that the Ariel role alone would make her very famous as a voice actress. What other stuff did Jodi Benson do besides performing on Broadway? Did she do commercials too?
