How crazy is Aug?

How crazy are the parks in Aug, like mid Aug. As far as weather and as far as crowds. Is it totally a bad idea to go at that time?

Extremely hot and humid.Crowds towards the middle/end of the month start to die down .They are moderate sized ( not low but not insanely high either).

It's been a few years since I was there at the end of August. I just remember how hot and humid it was. I wear glasses so whenever I went outside they fogged up. In fact, I swear my entire body "fogged up" whenever I went outside as it was that quickly that you were wet.

If you take an afternoon break and shower/change clothes it is tolerable. Not my favorite time to go, but if you can only go at that time, like we could because one was a teacher and another in school at the time, it is still a magical time.

We normally go in mid July; however, this past year we went in August and said we would absolutely, positively, never again go in August. It was more hot, more humid, and more crowded than any time we ever went in July.

Because we are planners, we were stll able to have a good time (it IS WDW after all :), but it was still a time of year we will never go again b/c it was just that much worse than July.

The almost daily thunderstorm may cool the temps down. We stayed at the parks pretty much open to close because there are plenty of places to cool off. I dislike heat and humidity as much as anyone, and I would go again in mid-late August.

That is really the only time we can go this year, we have a kid in school and we dont want to pull him out.

is it so bad that we should just re-think going at all :/

No, it isn't that bad crowd-wise. I, too, dislike the humidity but I made sure I knew where to go to cool off or take breaks during the day. I also made sure to take note of the weather so I didn't need to run very far for shelter in case of thunderstorms. Pack a lightweight poncho from a dollar store and a battery operated fan/mister and you will be fine!

It is very hot and humid. But that wouldn't stop me from going. However, since that is hurricane season, I recommend vacation insurance in case you get stuck there or can't get there due to a storm.

I admire your respect for your child's education and not wanting to take him out of school. I am frequently shocked by all the people on here who think time in the classroom isn't important enough to schedule their vacations around school breaks.

Like I said, it is tolerable. Just take the suggestions people are offering about taking breaks, etc. and you will have a great time! I would go late August again if that was the only time I could go. Visiting WDW, even in the heat and humidity of August, is better than not going at all.

We are going this year for our 4th August trip in a row.
It's the only time we can go.
Yes, it is hot, humid and rainy, but we always have a great time!
We never find it too crowded, but because we only go in August we don't really know any better.
Get to the parks early, or go later in the day/night.
Don't get caught in the heat mid day or everyone in your party will get very cranky!

I will have to second the humidity issue. I have lived in Texas and central florida so humidity is not an issue or so i thought.... The humidity in August in Florida was bad for us. So we will never go back again in August. If you want to try it and see if you can tolerate it then all the power to you. I would take a shower in the morning and by the time I had waited at the bus stop I was already sweating. It was sweating everywhere even on my arms. I am no weakling but if you go plan according you may fair better than us. I am one of these people that go all morning and afternoon....then eat ....then some more rides....then back to room but in August you really need to do the plan of early morning then back to resort then later in the afternoon/ evening to finish up. Also I lived in central Florida and should of know better. We always went and stayed in doors during the mid afternoon. I thought I could handle it but it ended up with me being hot and soggy.

I've never been to Disney in August, so I can't speak to the crowds.

As far as the weather goes, I live here so know that pretty well. Although it's hot and humid mid day, mornings can be very nice. If I were going during summer, I would plan to be at the parks for rope drop. Lunch and swimming in the hottest part of the day and go back to the parks for evenings.

Mornings are best since they are not typically humid. Evenings are cooler but not as comfortable due to the humidity.

Like someone else said, I would rather do Disney in August than not at all.

This is exactly what I was going to say! I went twice in Aug. If you do go, go to the park early, pack a LOT of water and get the water park hopper option so you can do that in the heat of the day then come back once the sun goes down...

We are returning this August for our 9th annual trip. We have been going each year in August. We love it!! Yeah it's hot and humid but so is home in CT! We alternate beginning of aug with mid August every other year. We buy the AP and get 2 trips out of it.

The only time we have hit crowds is EMH evenings at MK. We are a rope drop family. We can usually have most of MK done by 1130. Leaving adventure land on frontier land for the afternoon. We are excited to explore the new Fanatasy land this summer., We rode Star Tours 12 times in a row one EMH morning. We we quite the wait was 30 mins. We do use FPs too. Even we the strict return time last year we did get to ride a lot.

We do bring a squirt bottle that we freeze over night to cool ourselves down. Plus we carry frozen water and small gatorade bottle with us. We pack our trusty Disney rain ponchos too. There are plenty of places to duck into to cool off.

I've only ever been during the beginning of August, and while it is hot I've enjoyed it every time. And Star Tours that many times in a row, wow. Doing 2 in a row did me in lol.

I agree that it is HOT but when is it not hot in the summer months @ Disney? We have gone twice in Aug for the 3rd week and booked again this year. We have gone in May, Sept and Oct before and although Sept is our fav month to go, now that are kids are school aged, we will not pull them out of school the 1st 2 months. So, we are sticking with 3rd week of August as its right before school starts and its the last 'horrah' before school starts up.

Having said that, the crowds are not bad at all. I think on average we wait 20 minutes for an attraction... of course, longer for the most popular ones of upward of 45 minutes, but there are also attractions that we literally walked right on.

We spend a lot of time at the pool and come and go as we please in the parks. Just get a spray bottle to cool yourself off and enjoy!

The 4th week is probably the best week in Aug to go if you can.

Sorry hit the send button too soon.,

We don't go back to the resort for the pool mid day. We loose too much park time. When the dc where little they slept in the stroller while the older dc rode rides.. Plus me in the pool mid day tends to turn me lobster red no matter how much sunscreen I use. We tend to hit the pools in the evenings after supper.

I have pics from recent trips of empty parks. We have found most rides walk on for the most part.

We have gone once mid sept -- too many love bugs. Early October was fantastic but the was when the 2 oldest were 2 and 4. We can't pull them from school. We went one time for Valentine day -- plain mad house. My first trip was 4th July and another mad house.

People look at me like I'm crazy when I say we go in August but we think it's great. We are even the same family that loves a good blizzard too!!

DS14 is starting HS football this August so we are squeezing in a trip before practice starts. I am hoping we can continue the same for the next 4 years. Going in July kind of frightens me!

Good luck with your decision.

Oh gosh August. The trip we went took in August is the trip we do not speak of. It was horrible. The motto became, "Just smile for the damn pictures so nobody will know!" lol Seriously, I will never go in August again. The lines weren't horrible but we still didn't enjoy ourselves, especially with DD crying and complaining too. Have you considered Disneyland? It's much better than it used to be and has some of the "big ticket" rides from various WDW parks (Soarin, Little Mermaid, Toy Story Mania) and the new Carsland is supposed to be awesome! Did you know they also have a Bug's Life land? Who knew? I didn't even know about it till I got there. And the World of Color show, two thumbs up. :) It will still be warm but not nearly as humid and will cool off nicely at night!

But seriously, there are almost no pictures of me from our Florida August trip because I'm sweating in every. single. one. of them. Even the morning ones. By the end of the week we would stay in the parks for 2 hours and then go back to the cabin till the evening. Here I am still sweating at 1900 Park Fare, even though we'd been there for at least 20 minutes lol. Now granted that was before I lost a lot of weight, but neither of my parents are as heavy as I was and we all had a similar experience. :faint: I guess it just depends on how sensitive you are to heat. There were plenty of people there who thought it was fine!

It was right after they reopened it after the update. We were trying to see how many scenes we could ride.. YDS was finally tall enough to ride and he loved it!! If I remember correctly DH took YDS and DD back on several more times that afternoon while I took the two older DS on RNR and TOT.
