How come you don't move?

Entire family is in the same town--blocks away! Staff at Cardnial Glennon know his history and he gets good care there. So, we're probably here for the duration!

DH and I would love to move to a warmer climate, we both hate winter. We can't now because of our jobs and our grandmothers. If DH is able to transfer out of state or if he gets laid off again in 4 years we'll seriously consider it.

I, too, was an only child, and we always said, after my parents passed we would move, probably to Florida. Well, that has happened, and we're still here in Mass., whining about the cold and snow. Now we're saying we don't want to move the kids to a different school. My son is a Freshman in high school, and my daughter is in 7th grade. So now we're thinking in 6 years after she graduates. However, my husband's company may be headed for a "not-so-bright" future. If that happens in the next 6 years, we're moving for sure. It is a scary thing to do though, I think.

We have been seriously talking lately about moving to Florida. We have also decided that we will move if my mother/father and sister also do. We are all unsure because of jobs and school. I really was unaware of how unhappy alot of people were with the schools in fla, until I saw many of the posts here.

Jobs, school, family, and money.

DH *loves* his job here. He really doesn't want to leave that, and I don't blame him.

I'm pretty much happy in mine, though one of the biggest reasons for me to stay is no longer here, and that was my dad. :(

I'm trying to get my master's, and I really like the program I'm in and *love* a couple of the professors, so I want to stay here until I finish that program.

My mom's still here, and all of DH's family is here. Though my mom may choose to move if she can sometime in the future. She dislikes Houston as much as I do.

And, of course, money. It costs a *lot* to move cross-country. Can't afford that right now. :(

Then, of course, our house. I *love* our house. True, I could find another elsewhere, but it's still way too new to just up and sell and leave unless we had to. :)

So sometime in the future, probably in 5-10 years, we'll look at moving again. But for now, we're stuck here in Houston. :)

i live in my dream place. I would never want to live anywhere besides Maine...it's so beautiful...and being a born 'Mainah' i'm used to the 'cold' winters:D

jobs. dh and i could not get a job most of the places i would like to move to.

Family. I'm an only child and my DD is my parents' only grandchild. If we moved, I'm pretty certain it would kill them. Years down the road, DH and I will make the move to Florida.

One pretty good job, one really good job, and two elderly DMs.
:D

Like most others we are tied here until retirement, 7 years from now.

I just wanted to add that this is a very interesting thread.

Good question...

We have actually been asking ourselves this lately and Chris has updated his resume and we are going to start sending them out. We originally moved here to be near my mom. We once had the opportunity to transfer to Denver and my mom got very upset and begged us never to leave her (she was about 42 at the time...so we aren't talking an elderly woman). My mother and I don't speak anymore and haven't for over a year so there is really nothing holding us here. Neither of us have very many friends here and we don't particularly enjoy this area.

Mo is just in Kindergarten so I think if we are going to make a move, we need to do it very soon before she gets older and makes close friendships.

Chris' work is talking of transferring him to Phoenix within the next few years and I have no desire to move to Phoenix. In fact, the thought depresses me so I guess we need to look elsewhere or we will be stuck moving where I will probably be more unhappy than I am here.

I love my house, my job and the people I work with and that is about it. I think the thought of uprooting and moving with 2 kids, 2 dogs, and 2 cats scares me more than anything. ;)

We are trying. First need to find myself a comparable job, then we will put the house up and go.

We are moving! We are going from Long Island to Las Vegas. DH got a great job offer so we decided to go for it. My DM is coming with us. DH's parents recently moved to Florida. My brother is already is Las Vegas. Only DH's sisters will be in Long Island and New Jersey.

Our DD's are 7 and 10. We wanted to make the move before they started middle school.

We're really looking forward to a winter with no snow!

I am the opposite of most of you, I have moved more times in my life than a lot of people. Family has never been a consideration, except as a reason to have moved, putting 2000 miles betweem us and DHs mother was really nice. It improved their relationship 1000%. We would like to move to the west coast of FL, but will wait till DH can really retire.

Mosmom, I lived in the Phoenix area for 8 years, DH never liked it, he didn't have friends, he didn't like the short spring and fall seasons (like 2 weeks each), etc. But salaries there are very low, and he got a great offer to move back to the east coast. Now he misses the AZ winter, and we have only been away 3 months. If you want to PM me, I can give you some inside info about AZ. I loved it there, and would not have left unless it was for FL. The job DH got just dropped out of the blue, it wasn't planned at all.

What's wrong the schools in Florida?

Have you researched the curriculum and the quality of the teachers and found them to be below your standards or are you just going on old pretenses and stereotypes?

DH's job. He wants to stay in the company he works for, which is large, but they just won't pay for relocation or up the salary enough to cover the move.

We keep trying.

We will actually be moving in the next 2 years. When my father passed away 3 years ago we moved my mother in with us. My mom is a very active 60 year old, she has also been with the same company since she was 16 years old. To retire with full benefits she has to stay until she is 62 which will be in December of 2005 so not quite 2 years now. The moment she retires we are gone.

Thankfully DH has a job with the cable industry and has so much education in the industry that finding a job won't be difficult for him. He has already had 4 job offers. 3 in Northern Arkansas and 1 in Brandon Florida, near Tampa, but of course we can't leave my mother here.

So right now we are researching where we would like to move, looking at schools and ratings, looking at the cost of living, insurance, taxes and all of that kind of stuff. This time next year we will start with the process a little more seriously and narrow down a place to go. We are all VERY VERY excited to get away from Mississippi ((IDIOTVILLE))!!

Place we are looking at now, are

Tampa/Orlando (and no not just because of Disney)
Portland, Oregon
Northern New York State
Minnesota
Virgina/North Carolina

Of course J.C. and I were looking at realtor.com last night and we were in Beverly Hills looking at a 25 million dollar home....J.C. says "is that a lot of money??" I said "NO!! We could buy 3 of those!" ROTFLMBO!!!!!!

If your ever bored go look at those homes WOW!!!!!!!!

When you've been fortunate enough to have lived in the same town for 41 years, surrounded by a loving family, precious friends and priceless memories, how can I not stay here?:sunny:

I'm pretty sure she meant that she didn't want to uproot her in the middle of school and take her away from friends and her life as she knows it. I didn't take that as a hit to Florida schools at all.
