How come Disney hasn't expanded the Monorail?

I am surprised that with the supposed cost of a million a mile why it ever got expanded to Epcot in the first place. How did they justify the cost of it then? BTW, when was that built?

To give people some idea of the cost of monorail building, it cost $360 million to build 2 miles of monorail around the Newark Airport Parking lots. That to me seems the most similar to a monorail from Epcot to MGM.

An anti-monorail group gives an average cost of actually built monorails to be about $138 million per mile. A pro-monorail group gives estimated for costs on proposed monorails to be about $25 million per mile.

Epcot opened Oct. 1, 1982.

They built the monorail between TTC and Epcot during the previous year.

I remember looking up in awe as the unfinished monorail tracks snaked off in the distance from TTC to "parts unknown" when we visited Florida (and a trip to WDW) for the launching of the very first Space Shuttle, Columbia, which (after some delays) launched April 12, 1981.

I'm quite surprised at the price of 1 million/mile. What, are they using the Big Dig people to do this thing? I bet it can be done cheaper today than in the past.

Wasn't the Big dig somewhere closer to $2 BILLION per mile?

I have heard this rumor for a while now that they are expanding so I went off and did research a little while back and found this on a site. Its from Jan 2000.

As part of the proposed upgrade plans to the WDW transportation system, a brand new TTC will be built. While information is still sketchy, we do know that it will be in a different location to the current TTC, and will interface the new monorail expansions and the other 2 transport systems (one of which is a light rail system). Progress on this project is well forward, ground clearing and drainage preparation is already underway.

On the monorail expansion we have be informed that current plans show routing to 5 major parks?!? It appears that the monorail will link all parks and the TTC, with Downtown Disney and the resorts being linked by the remaining 2 new transport systems.

i always wondered why they didn't expand to WL too...the connection is so close that there seems to be only a little to be added...oh well..I can dream!

I think one of the problems with adding more to the monorail is the resorts--How would Disney justify adding it to some and not others? I would like to see a monorail to the parks--that's it--A closed system there and back---It would probably be cheaper to add more TTC's this way your resort bus picks you up and drops you off at the TTC for the park you're going to

Forget the hotels totally it adds more money to the total just do monorails for what everyone is actually there for and that is the parks

Did anyone hear the rumour that they would connect some sort of lite rail between MGM and EPCOT. What I am talking about is the same "lite rail" that is in the Orlando Airport taking passengers from Security Check port to their actual GATE for the airline. I also heard that this "lite rail" would not be raised like the monorail system, it would be much lower to the ground.

I'd bet (if I had any money, which I don't - Disney has it all, LOL!) that WDW will add another deluxe resort on the present resort loop before it extends the present monorail.
