How cold is it really?

We arrive 10/30 from Hawaii and have no frame of reference. It's always summer here. I always overpack and I am trying to change that, so really, how much cold stuff do we need? Long-sleeved shirts? Hoodies? Fleece pullovers? Parkas? haha. One pair of jeans? Will we ever just wear shorts and a short-sleeved t-shirt?

We are there for 11 days.

It will be cooler than you are used to. Just like it's generally warmer than we are used to up in WA. :)

So bring layers! Even being from WA, even if we're wearing clothes for warm weather during the day, our sweatshirts etc come out at night. DS once needed a fleece hat, scarf, and gloves, along with his sweater in the morning on early December (he didn't get scarf and gloves, but I tried to find some to buy!)

So bring it all. :)

I also like looking at the old farmer's almanac (you can google that and get their online version) to see temperatures, times for sunset, etc etc to help plan for things.

I feel your packing pain!!!

We leave Monday for 7 days and I'm tyring to keep our suitcases under the 50 lb max!

The temps in So Cal have been cooler than normal for this time of year. Plan for low 70's during the day and mid to low 50's at night. Any temps above those would be a bonus. There has been more rain than normal, as well.

You just kind of have to be prepared for it all. Rain gear, sleevless and short sleeved top with shorts or capris and turtle necks, heavy coats with gloves and everything in between.

Layers are always smart as the early AM hours will be much cooler than mid day hours and the nights can be down right cold this time of year.

I was at DL last year the same time and one day I wore a sleevless top and capris and the next night I had on a sweater, jeans, coat and gloves.

Gloves??? OMG I had no idea! Now to figure out where the heck to get gloves in Hawaii haha.

Thanks for the feedback so far! So does this mean that we won't be swimming? I totally thought we would be going down the slide every day at GCH. Bummer! I know it's "heated", but are people swimming?

I wouldn't bring a parka or heavy coat. I'd bring items you can layer. Some long-sleeved shirts, a sweatshirt & T-shirts. Long pants for sure. Since you're used to warm weather, I'm betting that you'll be too cold for shorts, even during the afternoon.

We were just at WDW and it was a real shock to get home to NorCal - way too cool for October!

I agree with this. I don't think you'll need a parka or anything, but I do think it will be a little chilly in the early mornings and evenings. I am a big wimp, originally from Florida, now living in SoCal. This morning when I left for work I had on snowboarding socks, Under Armour tights, pants, an Under Armour long sleeve shirt, a tee shirt, a coat, and an ear-warmer/headband, and I was perfectly comfortable outside in a rainy 58 degrees. I would bring long pants and long sleeve shirts in addition to a hoodie sweatshirt. Layering is key. It can be 70 in the day, so jeans and a tank top would be perfect, but once that sun goes down, it can get cool fast, so a sweatshirt is the bare minimum, especially for a family like yours that is used to warm temperatures.

Like everyone else is saying, bring layers. It's usually a little warmer at this time of year during the day but lately it's been chilly. Not sure if it's going to warm up or not. It's like winter here already. I remember last year at halloween wondering if DS would be too hot in his costume because it was still very warm during the day but I don't think that will be a concern this year. Since you're from a warmer climate then you'll probably be cold.

There might be people swimming but they're probably from places like Minnesota or Wisconsin. lol.

Hmm, so I need to join the Polar Bear Club? Haha. We will still give it a go, then jump in the jacuzzi! I made it like we'd be lounging by the pool watching the boys going down the slide all afternoon when I presented the idea of the trip to DH hahahahaha.

We're not bringing parkas. However the younger ones will have North Face and I will be in a wool coat at night. I live in the Chicago area so I am used to very cold weather. I also know how being cold can really put a damper on having fun.

Early entry will have us walking from DLH to DL at 7am and the Halloween parties and weekend hours will have us walking back to DLH past midnight. The lows are being forecasted in the low 50's for all of next week. So yeah, coats, long pants and gloves are being packed.

haha coming from Michigan we went last year around those dates and 70 above is a perfect not-warm-not-cold temp:thumbsup2. We were wearing just shirts and jeans all day. But we did layer a bit at night (was around 60+). Definitely no parkas LOL .. well thats just from my experience and obviously based from where I come from! :P

You might have better luck hitting the Target in Garden Grove for cheap gloves then trying to find them in Hawaii! If you find that you might need them.

We are from Hawaii too :)

When we went 2 Junes ago, at night I had my DD2 in jeans, usually a tshirt, under a long sleeve tshirt, then a children's place jacket (as you know, we can't find thicker stuff here so I tried to make do), now that was in June, so I think just be prepared to layer and you can take on or off as needed in the evenings. 9 years ago we went when my nephew was 3 at Thanksgiving and I remember him wearing jeans with long sleeve tshirt in the day, and we layered him at night. It is a cold we are not used too, not as cold as San Fran area feeling, but it is still pretty cold for us Hawaii folks, who pull out the double blankets when we get in the low 70's, high 60's right :) LOL

We are staying at GCH too in Nov. (if DH gets off of work, his boss his changing his mind)

as for gloves, we bought DD3 gloves at the ice palace for like $3 or something, to best described them would be like a sweater, medium thickness, haha, sorry. I saw gloves for ladies at target a couple weeks ago, as well as at Kaneohe Ross's, and both places were cheap.

Have fun!! 11 days at the GCH, I'm so jealous!!!! :)

Funny, we are heading to Kona, HI for Thanksgiving week :cool1: and have no idea what to pack. We are in Oregon and though we have had a nice Indian type summer, the rain and cool days have finally arrived. I am planning on packing my capris and shorts. Last year we were at Disneyland for Thanksgiving and wore jeans and t shirts everyday with hoodies at night. Hope you have a wonderful time whatever the weather.

Another place to look for affordable (one trip use only!) wintery gear is Old Navy. Since we usually go in January (yep... we were there for the Storm of the Century 2010!) that's the place i go to pick up fleeces, gloves, scarves, hats, etc. for the piglets. By the time our next trip rolls around (December is coming up fast), they have usually outgrown what we previously used. Old Navy is affordable enough that I don't feel too bad if have to end up donating their barely used winter gear.

Ice Palace, huh? Would never have thought of that! We live in town, and will check out Gymboree and then Old Navy today. I have cold weather stuff, but obviously the boys have outgrown theirs from our last winter trip in 2007/2008.

Funny how we are so "cold" when it's 70 degrees, yeah??? Hope you make it in Nov!!!

Yeah, I love Old Navy for things like this! I already looked on their website, and funny enough, they sell that stuff here (for people visiting from the Far East -- they LOVE shopping here).

Hello! I am from Hawaii. :)

My family and I was in Disneyland and San Diego from October 6 - 13 of this year. We just missed the rain while we were there. Our Hawaii friends who were there the week before suggested to bring long sleeves and jeans. Being from Hawaii, I am always "cold". I agree what the other people suggested to pack layered clothing.
I packed T-shirts and jeans. I packed long sleeve pajamas - got them from Old Navy / Children's Place for my boys (ages 5 and 7) . I also packed a hoodie jacket for the nights. And a rain jacket just in case but didn't use it.

Have fun!!!

Don't bet on it being colder but be prepared. The last 2 times I went in the beginning of November it was 90 degrees...hot!

Since you're going to Old Navy, I'd suggest picking up some zip up fleece jackets. that's about right for how cold it is here...wear t shirts underneath or long sleeves and jeans, plus a fleece jacket. It really isn't much colder than that....mid 60s, low 70s lately.

The boys have fleece pullovers. I am a crazy Gymboree shopper so I had them already. I did get them a faux fur lined earflap hat and matching gloves today at Gymboree so I did not go to Old Navy. I packed many layers and I don't think we'll be too cold.

It seems like the weather is warming up compared to last week, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Plus, they are so cute in the hats! I am still praying for swimming weather -- they are so looking forward to the slide!

Born and raised here in So. Cal. so to me it can get very cold at night. I can be seen wearing thermals under my jeans and top when it gets in the low 60's. Gloves and scarfs.

This week looks like it will be warmer during the day (due to Santa Ana winds) but it'll still be cool/cold at night.

I'll be going tomorrow night and will be wearing a warm jacket and probably bringing some gloves, just in case. Maybe even thermals under my jeans later in the night.
