How can we do a day at Universal with no car?

Where are you staying? If you are staying at any of the US hotels, there are shuttle boats that will take you back and forth.
If you are staying on Disney property there is a shuttle that will take you to and from US. Not sure how much it costs.Otherwise, there is always taxis, city busses, and renting a car.

If you're staying at a hotel on International Drive the I -Ride Trolley can drop you off very close to Universal.

Your best bet would be to make arrangements with Mears to catch their shuttle over for the day. You would need to make reservations 24 hours in advance. I believe the round trip fare is $18.00/per adult...kids are cheaper.

I knew i saw something about this the other day, eventually found it.
Its a 1 day ticket for the 2 parks and transport from a Disney area hotel, might be ok for you, its the first one- Ticket with Transfer

We hired a Town Car. I was going to do the shuttle, but I decided the Town Car might be a nicer way to go. This way we are being picked up exactly when we want to be from AKL, dropped off at Hard Rock, and picked up the next day to go back to AKL. And, bonus for the Town Car dude, we decided to use the car service back to the airport for departure instead of doing Magical Express.

I agree with jackskellingtonsgirl...a town car is a great way to get around. We used one to and from the airport last year. I'll never do it any other way.
