Freedom House ends assistance for Gilmores


The Freedom House in Green Bay is no longer accepting donations on behalf of the Gilmore family of Leland, Miss., and will return any assistance.

In a news release, the Freedom House said the Gilmores misrepresented themselves as evacuees from Hurricane Katrina when in fact the Gilmores faced an Aug. 29 court date and had unpaid rent in Leland and were unable to show proof of any damage to their house or car.

Items such as housing, jobs, clothing, cash were designated for the Gilmores but were held pending a background check, the Freedom House said.

The Freedom House said it will be contacting those who offered assistance or gave money in order to return all donations. “We commend the people of Green Bay and their willingness to help others,” the Freedom House said.

Why do people need to use a disaster like Katrina for their own personal gains?

it's happening all over, and i wish i had an explanation for it, but all i can come up with is that some people are just greedy and heartless-there have already been a handful of people arrested in my hometown in NE alabama for fraud b/c they claimed to be evacuees who needed help when in fact, they were locals who just wanted free money.
