How busy is US/IOA first/second week of Jan.?

I know Jan is a slow time for Disney, should I assume it's also slow at Universal?

Usually very slow. Will pick up some on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, but otherwise most things are a walk-on. We went a couple of years ago during the last week of January and Portofino was a virtual ghost town.

what do you think about the 7th & 8th? Can't afford to stay on site this time. It's going to kill me watching those resort guests walk by me

January 7th and 8th should be fine. It shouldn't be very crowded. I'd do IOA on the 7th since it is Friday and do Universal on Saturday. IOA tends to get longer lines on Saturday. Get expresss pass for Hulk or Spiderman at IOA. Get an express for Mummy or Shrek at Universal. Be there at park opening and you should be fine. Use single rider line when available if stand-by line is longer than 15 minutes.
