How busy are the days surrounding the 4th of July?

I'm considering a longish trip that would have the 4th of July in the middle. I understand the 4th will be a ridiculous crowd but how are the surrounding days? When does it really pick up before and drop off after? We've been at Christmas so are familiar with a max crowd. How is the comparison?

Christmas is worse, but not by much. Figure 7/4 is the peak of summer season, the closer you are to it the worse the crowds will be.

Gradual increase leading up to, gradual decrease after. Expect very heavy crowds for a week or two on either side.

It will be almost as crowded as Christmas, but also hot and very, very humid.

We find MK to be extremely crowded on July 3 and 4. Therefore, the last couple years we have been going to AK on July 4 and crowds are mild there. I will admit to still going to MK on July 3, but we learned (the hard way) to start trying to leave the park way early if we want to make it back to our resort (Poly) to watch the show!

We do not have any issues with crowds on any other dates during that week.

I have read it is not that bad if you avoid MK on the 4th. We will be there the last week in June.
