I'm hosting Christmas this year and was thinking that a ham is both easy and tastey. But I'm not sure how big of a ham I need? I don't want a ton of leftovers but at the same time, I want to make sure everyone gets enough too.

Boneless I think it's 3/4 of a pound per person. Bone in bumps it up to pound. I know my mom follows the 1/2 pound rule and is often short on meat.

Depends on how much other food you have. I go half pound of per person but we have plenty of sides to go with the meat. Who is attending makes a difference as well. If you have lots of kids and elderly, they will probably eat less. If you have more adults, they will probably eat more.

You can stick to the 1/2 pound by serving appetizers to curb hunger a bit. Cheese, olives, veges etc. Also, you will have desert so people wont walk away hungry.

It all depends on what type of ham you are talking about. Fresh ham, honey baked ham, bonless ham. bone in? All adults?

6 adults, two boys but my nephews are decent eaters. I won't serve aps (my family isn't big into snacking before the big meal) and I'll have at least three sides plus bread. And desert of course (likely to be apple pie w/ice cream and assorted cookies).

Not sure on type of ham yet, probably spiral cut bone-in.

OK - so 8 adults spiral ham bone in. 7-8 lb. ham (feeds 8-10 people).

I serve a bone in baked ham every year for Christmas Eve and I always estimate at least 1 lb per person. I've never been short meat but there are not a huge amount of leftovers either. We don't do appetizers either.
I serve it with several sides including a potato dish, a green bean dish, a carrot salad, a green salad and tons of bread.

I have been going to SAMs for years now buying the half Spiral cut and LOVE it. Leave a tad of the water in the sugar mixture out.

I carve in to three "C" shape sections off the bone. The top, a "U"---the each side, A "C" and reverse "C" on the side to bottom...
.Freezes good too.

Remember too that ham freezes well. Just freeze it in the portion size you want. You could freeze some to put into a casserole later, soup, dinner, or sliced for lunch.
