i have read some pretty bad things on here about the ferry from Cozumel to the mainland. All the excursions that appeal to us are on the mainland. There are 2 people in our party that do suffer from motion sickness, however they will be wearing the patch or taking meds. Can anyone speak first hand about suffering from motion sickness, taking meds, and going on the ferry?

We took the ferry on our last DCL cruise. We had an absolutely gorgeous day for the trip, so not really a lot of motion sickness issues for us. There were a couple of kids, however that did need a trash can handy on the return trip.

I'll just say the ferry does cross open ocean and I can certainly understand that it can be quite rocky for crossing.

DH does have motion sickness issues, and usually would use the patch for such a crossing, but as long as he was on the outside (upper) deck it was fine. But I would say that's not really the norm. I've read lots of reports of people having motion sickness issues on this trip.

on our last cruise five of our party took the ferry. the one person who said 'wont be me getting sick' was the one who threw up. three of the other four felt queasy. this was on a brilliant day, no winds at all. i'm glad I stayed behind.

30 min roller coaster. My family of 4 was fine.. But I would say every row had at least two people hovered over their get sick bags.

The crew is there to distribute and collect the bags, so nothing on the floor. And the bathrooms on the ferry were pretty clean.

We sat in the front row staring at the TV of ads.. And we were good. We also let our kids play their DSs on the ride back.

Editing to say, there was some wind/waves our two Ferrytrips.

Thanks for the replies, I think I might have to change our plans.

My FIL got sick on the gondolas in Switzerland and couldn't handle the spinning restaurant. He also will not ride roller coasters.

My SIL gets queasy from airplane rides and was very scared to go on the cruise because of her motion sickness.

I used to LOVE thrill coasters and spinning rides, can not handle them now. I also got queasy on the glass bottom boat tour in Nassau because it was so rocky and stuffy down there.

I guess we have to find something fun in Cozumel....

These boats go the mainland are the worst for seasickness, there enclosed, low in the water and Bob up and down, if you want to avoid sea sickness you need fresh air, be able to look at the horizon, and not be enclosed.

My DD gets seasick on them so after the first two times we avoided them.

There terrible.

I get queasy on a merry go round. I was fine because I took my meds and brought cold water and granola cereal packs to eat. Don't not go because of that boat.

My wife had the worst time ever on one of these ferries. It was particularly bad that day, sunny but windy. Many people were sea sick. We got to the mainland and just turned around and got back on the ferry. There was no way we could do the tour we signed up for. It took her a few hours to recover when we got back to the ship. And this was with motion sickness pills.

She claims she is never going to Cozumel again.

Dolphinaris is on Cozumel. You can book it through DCL or get a great deal on its website and take a short cab ride. No ferry required. Thats what we did in October and had a blast! I had no idea you could even take a ferry to the mainland :rotfl:

Definitely rethinking the Secret River. We don't get sea sick but who wants to take a miserable ride with sick people? Or buck the odds ourselves???? Definitely reconsidering.

we did the ferry to get to the mainland for our excursion. We all had the patch on so no problems but I'll have to say about 10 minutes into the trip there and back there were folks who were not in a good way. I really didn't understand why, yes you're enclosed and there are fumes from the engines but I can't say the water seemed overly rough or the fumes overly offensive, maybe we were far enough away.

What is there of interest to see on the Mainland? Had not even considered mainland, looked only at the island...any historical elements??

My family was fine. I did not find it particularly choppy on our trip. No issues. But then again, we have a 40ft SeaRay so we are used to the water.

There's lots to see & do, enough that I have actually shopped dedicated vacations to Playa del Carmen. Yes, there are some ruins & things but there's also a couple adventure parks. I've seen at least 1 episode of House Hunters International done in Playa. Lots to do & see.

My husband sold his boat (19.5 ft bass boat) in October. We've been out on the lake when the winds kick up 8 footers. Talk about a wild ride! The front would dive in and submarine. When my youngest was about 12 or so they took a big hit & my hubby & brother snagged him as he was flying out of his seat. All that said, not 1 of us ever got sick. But! We were not enclosed. That's what worries me. Being enclosed. I suppose I could always get the patch for us to use that day. I got seasick 1 time when I was a teenager. First time out on the ocean in my friend's dad's 55' sailboat. We were under sail in 8 - 10 ft. seas. I was down in the cabin & got sick. Once I was sick it was a done deal. Pure misery. I remember it enough to know I never EVER want to feel that way again.

We often stay in playa and ferry to Cozumel. Love the trip but it always makes us a slight bit queasy. Playa has great beaches, good shopping and great restaurants. And further in there are some good ruins and sights.

we were there in early january last year. i am not super prone to sea sickness, a member of our party throws up if the wind blows.

she didn't get sick, it was a rough ride. the boat folks seem to anticipate people yarking, there were garbage cans and bags everywhere ahead of time and CMs handing out dramamine on the way off the ship.

the ride over was rougher, i felt a little queasy, but was fine once we got there. ride home, i *thought* i might sit topside but lots of people were and actually it was fine.

i've heard/read that its always a bit choppy.

FYI: If you are getting the prescription patch, it has to be put on before hand. like 12 or 24 hours before and it lasts for 3 days. We also get a prescription for anti-nausea pills.

Good tips! I was thinking the patch would be a 24 hrs before thing. Wasn't sure, tho. Thanks for the heads-up!
