How bad is June?

We always go in the off season - but now that our boys are in school this is proving to be more difficult. We're thinking of going June 7 - June 14, 2008. How bad is it then? Meaning crowds?

Also, will I have a hard time getting my one-bedroom at OKW if I make the reservations now? That's our home resort...

It just depends. They have the Star Wars weekends then, and Gay week is around then, and both are well attended. I went last year in June, and thought the crowds as bad as they are at Christmas! Two years ago, they seemed smaller. Also, if you are a Northerner, June is unbelievably hot when you aren't used to it. I was more comfortable in July, because Michigan's weather had warmed up to Florida's heat level by then.

Not all schools are closed at that time it varies by state. I have been there in June but it has been a while. From what I recall the crowds were not that bad compared to July and most of August. But I do recall it being very humid more so than July and August but it could be that it is just so hot those months you do not feel the Humidity as much

We're used to going in May or October so you can imagine how crazy this will be for us - but if we don't go in June we won't be able to go again until 2010!!!! Due to other vacations coming up. Thanksgiving was an option but that would involve all of DH's family and I really don't want a huge reunion thing - just us!

We usually always need to go in June as well. We try for the first two weeks, but now DS is in high school baseball, so July & August here we come!

We always arrived on the Sunday after Memorial Day. Gay days are pretty much over and it is still lower point season. Crowds that week are not too bad, many schools still in session. The second week (this year it was June 11th) it gets noticeably busier as more schools are out. This year we had FP rides be 'sold out' by mid morning, and standby lines with 60-90 minute waits. Utilize the evening magic hours and spend time at the resorts in the afternoon.

DH and I, not the family, were there around June 10th for 2 years in a row now. This year we actually called our family to mention that maybe we want to rethink our June visit for '08 because it seemed as bad as August was last year. Then, miraculously, some of the humidity left and we had wonderful weather. So, it varies!

Our June '08 visit is booked, so we're giving June another chance with the family. This year we opted for October.

June's not so bad - after all it IS Disney, right

We've gone in June '06, June '07, and because we didn't think it was too bad we'll be there June '08 as well!

Heat & humidity were up there, but we come from VA, and the weather is not that much different. Lots of breaks, lots of water, plan for time in the AC, you should do just fine.

June 7 to 14 crowd will be very heavy in comparison to off-season but lighter than last two weeks in June; in fact you will notice it steadily increasing as you are there. We started doing June when we finally gave up on going Easter break and June crowd, though quite large, is nothing in comparison to Easter (they don't have crowds at Easter, instead they have overwhelming masses of humanity). Very hot and stays very warm at night, daily off and on thunderstorms (unless there is a drought in which case there could be little or no rain); chance sometimes of all day rain.

Usually easy to get 1BR at OKW even less than 7 months out. June is not a high DVC month and I have gotten 2BRs (preferred, not boardwalk view) at BWV (and OKW for relatives) less than 5 months out for June although that is more difficult if you are looking at last few days of June that start running into July 4 time which is hugely crowded.

ITA - June is not as bad as July in terms of crowds. We've found that, with our commando days behind us, the crowds are really managable by planning early morning and evening park time and AVOIDING the horror of EMH times/parks.

Our experience was the first week was great for EMH. Very little if any waiting in line. Even at Rock n Roller Coaster. Finish the ride, get back in line and within 5 minutes you were riding again. This all changed the second week and it was a mess! It was so crowded that several attractions including Fantasmic never checked to see if you should be there! There were more people around us that were staying off site than there were staying on. Lines now had waits of 60 minutes and more. I should have clarified in my prior post: The first week of June take advantage of EMH, after that do the parks not having EMH.

We always avoid the parks that have EMH and we go enough that we are content to go swimming and be mellow!!!!

I think if we go with the right mind set we'll be good to go - better going in June then not at all! haha

This may not work for everyone, and maybe the school systems are not as accomodating now, but when our kids were in public school (15 years ago, though not in highschool) purposely took our vacations during school. We really worked hard to make sure they were current in homework and studies, and we talked to and worked with the teachers to minimize the missing of a week from school. We probably did this 6 or 7 times.

I don't' know how the school system would respond to this type of request now... but it worked well for us back then.

Maybe starbox would have some input in this area. It has been a real long time since we worked with teachers to make our vacations happen. Maybe even the teachers don't have any say... I just don't know about that.

We usually do January and went in June about the same time you are talking about and were really not thrilled. THe crowds are way bigger and the heat was tough. We did less in 9 days then we do normally in four.

If you like water parks and swimming then it should not be a problem but for us the adjustment was really tough. We are trying October now

Maybe starbox would have some input in this area. It has been a real long time since we worked with teachers to make our vacations happen. Maybe even the teachers don't have any say... I just don't know about that.

No Child Left Behind has really put the pressue on most school systems to enforce mandatory attendance - and vacations of any kind are not a legally excused absence. Honestly, a teacher has a much better chance of taking off during the school year (I get 3 personal days and 10 days of sick leave annually- five of which don't have to be documented by a doctor) than a child does nowadays.

In Georgia, 10 unexcused absences in any high school year will bar a child from getting a driver's license. Death in the family and medical issues are the only real excusable absences. Of course, you may get lucky and have a really understanding principal - but there is a lot of legal pressure working against that sort of understanding/empathy right now.

Unfortunately, the No Child Left Behind program has really impacted our reagion too. I am not in the school system, but Mary Beth has been in for 15+ years.. and it seems that we (in apple country) have so many immigrants that the chances of getting all these students to meet the criteria is almost impossible... I am sure many other jurisdictions have the same problem.

I was hoping this was just our problem. Don't know how/if this helps the OP.

I appreciate the school suggestions. Boys are in Catholic School - every other year there is a 2 day conference for teacher's in October so the boys would only miss 3 days. We can get vacations excused - I just don't want to take them out for more than 3 days....
