my family and i were at DLR for 5 days, the second to last week of august two years ago. we got in line 30 minutes before opening each day, and we were able to get a LOT done in the first 2 hours (probably 10 rides). after 10am, things got busier, but we had picked up FP's and were using a RideMax itinerary, so we really were able to continue to ride everything we wanted with minimal wait times. we left the parks at around 2pm for a 4-5 hour break for an off-site lunch and swim/nap break back at the hotel. crowds were heavy each evening when we returned to the parks, but again, we used our RideMax itinerary and skated through without having to wait in any terribly long lines.
i like august myself. the only thing i really didn't like was trying to get a tram back to the parking structure around closing. UGH! we had to have a stroller with us, so we had to wait in the "stroller line", which always seems to take longer than the regular lines (which were already crazy). one night we even just walked all the way back to the parking structure because the wait for the tram would have been close to half an hour.
also, plan meals at non-peak times if you go in august, because it can be really hard to get a table at DLR restaurants during the summer months, especially for a family. we got sick of trying by the end of our visit and were just eating all of our meals off site.
