How and how much do you tip the maid?

guess i might get flames on this.but just asking.when you stay at any other resort or hotel,do you tip the maid? Just curious.

Yes. Always have and always will.;)

I leave $5 a day for my family of four and also keep the room reasonably neat.

The answer to your question is yes. We generally leave $5.00 per day.

Tipping housekeeping is optional, anyplace you go. If you want to, do. If you don't, don't.

I am always stumped about tipping for maid service... I am already paying Disney a TON of money for my stay in april at SSR. I really fell that tipping is out of control. But I am going to feel the preasure as my kids have already seen the "horse" towels and think they this will be the norm... Oh joy... This is why Disney will not be an annual trip in our household.

Ops forgot to post this... unofortunatly for those on the DDP ( me too I am afraid) Tipping is on longer optional...

We tip $5/day for a family of 4 and $10 on the last day.

It depends on the service. I travel for frequently travel for business & pleasure & can find the same hairs on the floor on the last day as the 1st ... not MY hairs. Okay yuck. NOT tipping for that service. I don't find any problems at WDW. I'm taking it from your message that you do NOT tip & do not believe in it. It's an individual decision, of course. I work in a 2nd job which is sometimes tipped & sometimes not ... I'm here to tell you that when I get a tip it makes my day. The way I look at it is ... I may be making someone's day. Or maybe I'm just buying them a coffee & a buttered roll.

Also, keep in mind that tipping for the chambermaid in ADVANCE is in the true spirit of TIPping, i.e., to ensure prompt service. You DO tend to get better service when people know that you tip. Whatever your opinion of that issue is....

I'm with everyone else who says $2-3 per day, btw.

We tried to leave $5 each day, but at POP, the Mousekeeping knocked once and would not return. DS was napping and I asked every day if they could come any other time than 2pm and apparently the couldn't. SO my $5 sat on the table for a few days of our 8 night stay. I went out and asked for towels from their cart on the days they didn't clean our room.

$5 a day, every day (for DH and myself) - $10 if i ask for something additional (like cleaned comforters/blankets)

Well I'm certainly not experienced in tipping the housekeeping, BUT my DW did correct me on this oversight on our last trip in April. After tipping the first couple of days (roughly left $3 +/-) per day at FQ, mousekeeping threw out my dessert I was saving from CS the night before. Mind you it was in our refrigerator...days before our room was to be vacated.

Needless to say we left no more tips after that. Just another one of my many gripes about FQ.

Housekeeping base pay is the responsibility of Disney, along with ensuring their paying their staff competitively within the Orlando area. Tipping automatically is a mistake and can lead to acceptance of poor performance as we read more and more complaints about poor housekeeping. Please pay for performance and service received...I'm getting the feeling from reading this thread that people are tipping for the sake of tipping...

I tip $5 per day for me, my daughter and my sister. My daughter makes up Mousekeeping envelopes for the tip money to go into. We also put 'For Our Housekeeper' in English and Spanish on the envelope.

I do not understand something. How can you decide to tip a maid only for good service? It's not like the porter, or the waitress, where you are present for their service and can decide based on the service at the time. With the maid, don't you have to decide in advance because you may not have the same maid the next day? Is there something I'm not getting?

I tip $5/day for 3 adults. I straighten up the room before we leave.
I make envelopes ahead of the trip and have them all ready to go.
Yes tipping is voluntary.
I travel for work as well and I tip housekeeping whether I am at Disney or somewhere else.

Disney's housekeepers are salaried (not "base" pay to be supplemented by tips) and they are categorized as a non-tipped position. This isn't the Catskills in the 1950's where the same maid cleaned your room every day and had to rely on tips to live - it's a unionized resort in the 2000's. Disney doesn't want people to have to tip in order to get good service, they want EVERY guest to get good service. And, as you pointed out, it makes no sense to tip for a service you haven't received. Especially if you have to put the tip in a special envelope every day because the housekeeper is forbidden to pick up loose money and assume it's a tip!

That said - if the room is really well cleaned when we arrive, and the housekeeper has left a card with her name on it, and the room continues to be well cleaned, I generally leave a tip in appreciation. It's TOTALLY optional, and no one is stiffed if you don't leave a tip.

I agree! I did tip but only after they provided good service. I realized it was the same team of Mousekeeping each day. I've read some horror stories in here, and to be honest our room was not very clean upon check-in. My wife went behind them and cleaned up, but after the first complaint we did not have anymore issues.

We like to leave at least 3 or 4 dollars a night. I also like to leave a little personal note for the mousekeeper. It only takes a few seconds and I rarely ask for extra things to be done with the room. Instead, DH and I will take turns writing something like "Hi. Thanks for doing such a great job to make our room neat and tidy. We appreciate your hard work." Then I'll mention something about the weather or the day. I know that it sounds a little obsessive (and trust me, I am), but since we've started doing this, we seem to get little extras and the room is cleaner.

I agree. We handle housekeeping tips in a similar way. We assume that housekeepers are going to do a good job, and treat them respectfully. We very rarely ever have a problem, and but if we do, we address it in a pleasant manner, right away. :goodvibes

We (my dad and I) leave $5 per day. I bring the envelopes from home already to go; I just pull one our of my suitcase each day.
