I have been desperately trying to schedule a trip to the fort. Especially since the Military discount. I could do a few short weeks but I really want to hang out at the fort and have a great family vacation. So now I am looking at the 2nd week of may after my finals. The "crowd calender" on touringplan.com, says the crowds will be either a 5 or a 7,8. (10 being holiday crowds). Out of a week, there would be at least 4 lower crowd days. So for those of you who have been in may...would it be worth going? We don't like crowds. OR should we wait until OCt/Nov next year. (and once again try to schedule around school and work.)

Thanks

I've never stayed at the Fort in May but stayed at the CSR in May 2008 for 8 days (5/9-5/16) and that was my best trip ever! The weather was spectacular - mid to high 80s every day no rain. The crowds were non-existent. We walked on all major attractions with very little wait, 30 minutes max. We did see some love bugs, mostly around the pool area at the resort and at the water parks but they weren't too bad. I would do May again in a heartbeat! Enjoy!

May is one of the best times for crowds, schools aren't out yet and the weather is great

Another vote for May here! In May, the park hours are pretty much what they are in the Summer. After September, the parks start to close earlier. Haven't been to FW in May, but have done DW at that time and will be there in May this year (3rd week).

We went the second week in May last year and it was great! Not too hot - although we did have a fan in our tent. Still warm enough for swimming. The crowds were awesome. We previously went right before the 4th of July and going in May was like a dream come true compared to that. We didn't use any Fastpasses. We took advantage of EMH, though. People might warn you about love bugs, but we didn't have any problems. I say, book the trip! Have fun. Good Luck!

One note for May at the Fort, don't forget the bug spray, the yellow flys are out and some people are highly alergic as is my DW.

I just made reservations today for May 5-19 and am hoping for low crowds also. I was able to get a premium site with AAA discount for less than a full hookup site. Still debating on changing it to the later part of April but not sure which would have less crowds. :confused3 :confused3

Hoping to take my DGD since she will be out of school for the May dates; but don't know if that will work out.

Tnbob - What are these "yellow flys" you speak of??? Never noticed them before - is it a May thing. Also aren't the love bugs there in May or is it September??

Thanks everyone for the information. Sounds like we would like to go then.

Love May...my favorite time to visit. Enjoy the longer day light hours (remember it gets dark a bit earlier in October). I have visited several times the week leading into Memorial Day weekend, and never found the parks too crowded. In fact it seemed pretty light to me. Naturally, as the holiday weekend approached it was more crowded but we spent more time at the resort then. Earlier in the week the parks were a pleasure. I'd think earlier in May would be great. Nice weather and lighter crowds. It's warm, but without the humidity that you have in the summer.

The yellow flys are some kind of bug that come out at different times of the year, May being one of them. We go to the Fort usually the end of May and two years ago my DW got bit on her foot and it was swelled and sore for over a week, when we got home she went to the doctor and given antibiotics and it went away. Last year we weren't out of the truck 5 mins and she got bit several times and her hand swelled like a huge ball and was oozing pus and just a mess. I took her to the urgent care where they gave her antibiotics and told her that they had several people in with the same thing from the "yellow flys". They don't seem to bother me but she has had reaction twice now.

Gross. If I may ask the "dumb" question...what does a yellow fly look like? Is it big like a horse fly?

I would say your DW doesn't respond well to that bite.

no she doesn't respond well at all nor does it put her in a good mood.

they look like a small fly and they look kinds orange to me but she says they are yellow and apparently called "yellow flys"

They are kinda metalic looking....like ROBO-FLIES

May is my favorite time of year. I've been there several times right after Mother's Day. The crowds are pretty light and the weather is absolutely perfect.

Our usual travel patterns don't get us there too often in May, but this year we'll be returning, but not to the Fort.
