Houston?

Can I make a plug for the Katy area? It is a suburb on the far west side of Houston, but the commute to the 290 area would not be that bad. The plus for Katy is that it has EXCELLENT schools, still has that "small town" feel, has decent shopping (which is getting better) and is slated to have a real growth in medical facilties in the next few years (there are currently 2 large hospitals, but Texas Children's is building a campus out this way as are a couple of other hospitals). You can check out the Katy schools at www.katyisd.org. I love my home town!!

katy area is nice but that commute on I-10 isnt pretty. If he is working in the 290 area I think I would move to Cy-Fair. My BIL/SIL used to live up there. They were in a great neighborhood right of 1960 and 290 and were very happy with the schools in the area.

I wonder if it's where my sister lives! Wortham?

I am going to check out all the areas that everyone mentioned! I had already thought that Katy looked like it wouldn't be too bad a commute for him. I work in the medical field (ultrasound tech), and the tought of a few hospitals in the area is appealing, since I would probably want to find a job. My kids are 22, 19, 17, and 13, so I wouldn't be a SAHM, I need to work to keep from going  LOL!!!! any more advice is welcome!!! I love these boards.... there are so many nice people, willing to help with anything they can, not just Disney!!!! Thank you, everyone!!!

I can't think of one school district in the Houston-area that the same can't be said about, unfortunately. We originally moved to Spring, to get away from a certain Klein high school.

That is absolutely true, I just wanted to make sure the OP knew that you need to look at more than the school district (especially in the Houston area where so many of the school districts are so large) and look more at the individual schools your children would be going to.

I just moved to Spring in the last year and live in Klein ISD, which high school were you trying to get away from? Hope it is not the one my kids will go to.:scared1:

One thing you need to remember, is even if the distance says 20 miles, it could be more than an hour commute.

Also, no matter which area you pick there will be nearby hospitals, so you should not have a problem with finding a job.

Hi there!! Welcome to Texas. We moved here 5 years ago from wisconsin and have never looked back. We love it here!!! Cypress is growing up very fast!! When we moved here the only grocery store around was a new Randall's, but o year later, we had a Wal-Mart Super center and Kroger. Within the last year, we have gotten just about every store imagineable. Their is a new upscale outlet mall being built in Fairfield (and 290) which should be done in a year. I have a 8 and 6 year old in the Cy-Fair school district and can not be more happy with the school!!

Some Subdivisions to look at:

Coles Crossing
Bridgeland
Cypress Creek Lakes
Black Horse Ranch
Fairfield
Longwood
Lakes of Rosehill
Syndey Harboure
Northlake Forest
Stone Gate
Riata Ranch
Towne Lake

Those are all neighborhoods with building going on in them still or really new homes. I love to use www.har.com to find houses in the area! Good luck with the search and if you have any questions, feel free to pm me!!

The one I was trying to get away from, is the only one in Houston.

My oldest daughter went one year to Klein Oak, but she graduated from Klein Collins, and I have another one set to graduate from there next year. It was Klein Forest and Wunderlich that we moved to Spring to get away from. I knew the nurse and the principal there and heard my fair share of scary stories!

As far as middle schools, they've gone to Strack and Shindewolf and both went to Lemm Elementary.

Katy will be sooooooo much more desirable when I-10 is complete. Right now that commute could compete for one of the worst in the Houston-area, IMO. I think 290 would come in a close second - followed by I-45 north, heading into Conroe.

Small world! :)
