Why!? Why!? Why!?

I see all these great deals....$49, $59, $69$......each way. I am SOOO jealous!!!!!!

Houston NEVER has awesome prices, why is that???????????

Try living in Dallas! At least you guys can fly Southwest direct. Our only choices are American and Air Tran. In Dallas we don't even have any choices, much less decent airfares. But yeah, it makes you a little jealous when you see the great airfare and choices other have.

The joys of a hub city. Dallas is AA's hub, Houston is Continental's hub...... Minneapolis/St. Paul (my home aiprort) is NWA's home hub.... good prices are hard to come by....

I would love to see a SW, Jet Blue, etc.. come in here and offer some nice prices.... not going to happen, though.

I really don't understand either. But I think I've got an answer, they don't have to, they have the market to sell them without offering too many deals. It's ridiculous at times to see the various costs across the country. I booked my August flight to Orlando back in March and still ended up paying about $50 more r/t per passenger than the lowest price they offered it at. Sometimes it's just timing.

I know. I miss the pre-911 days when we could fly to Orlando for only $79 RT. :sad1:

I've found some deals to other states, but the fares to Orlando haven't budged much at all this year.:sad2:

Here is a good deal that I just booked, but I'm sure it wouldn't work for many others here.

I've been searching for a deal for the last week of June - July. I got an e-mail today about a 1 way out of Florida deal. Basically a few rental car companies need drivers in June/July to drive their cars out of Florida to selected airports. Hobby was on the list. I booked the $89 OW fare out of Hobby, and I got a mid-size (after free upgrade) rental car for 2 weeks for only $19.99/week ($79 for 2 weeks including taxes/fees)! We were considering driving to save money anyway, so now at least we only have to drive back (and not even have to drive our own car), plus we can visit other places like Tampa and New Orleans along the way. :woohoo:

Hopefully we will get a Toyota Corolla and the gas won't be too high. ;)

Ex-Speaker of the House and former Texas congressman Jim Wright's dreaded 'Wright Amendment' is the SOLE reason why airfares from DFW on American (which has a monopoly of well over 75% of the flights in & out of there) are MUCH higher than those on Southwest out of Dallas Love Field.

Southwest cannot fly non-stop to more than a handful of states from that airport, although they can (and do) fly non-stop from Austin, Houston Hobby & San Antonio to tons of cities withno meddling from a clueless Democratic congressman.

Consequently, if you live in a city with a single dominant carrier among the six 'legacy carriers' enjoying a monopoly, driving a short distance can save you tons of money in many cases, and especially when the city you're flying to is a Southwest Airlines city.

Go to the website for the Dallas Morning News (www.dallasnews.com) and put the words 'Wright Amendment, Southwest Airlines and/or American Airlines in the search box, and prepare to be disgusted if you're a Dallas resident, or plan to fly there.

Austin has the same problem!!! Check out Continental flights from AUS to MCO and they are at least $100 more than IAH to MCO. Even the SWA fares aren't too fabulous.
