My sis-in-law just moved in to a home with her boyfriend. I'd like to get them something as a house warming gift, but I'm not sure what. They are having a party on Saturday and I'll need it for then. Any ideas? Nothing too expensive. I was thinking a wind chime, but I don't know.....

How about a basket full of things like:

guest soaps
hand towels
potpourri
small fragrant candles

It is a pretty gift, and they could put the whole basket in the bathroom as is!

try to get something that will work in ANY decor.

candles are good - yankee candle's "home sweet home" is nice...however I was given FIVE of them when we moved into our home! heheh

bottle of wine is always nice too! or a candy dish of some sort (filled with candy of course) or potpourrie...if she's into that kind of stuff.

something for the kitchen? new dish towels/wooden spoon/spatula all tied up together is nice. Or even just a gift card to the local LNT or Bed bath and Beyond.

Yankee candles.

Or a less expensive alternative, I find that Mainstay candles from Wal-Mart smell excellent. The Apple pie scent is my favorite. They are as big as Yankee and I've seen gift sets of them.

i've also brought basket presents as housewarming gifts. Here's a couple ideas:

gardening basket:

either basket or bucket, arrange garden gloves, a few hands tools, seed packets, some live flowers in pots, a few small terra cotta pots, etc. Fill in gaps with spanish moss.

guest bath baskets:

pretty basket, arrange fancy hand towels, soaps, box of tissues, hand cream, etc.

kitchen basket:

collander or basket, arrange kitchen utensils, kitchen towels, jars of homemade jams, biscuits, etc.

or

pasta basket: collander or pasta bowl, filled with utensils, towels, homemade or speciality pasta and jars of sauce, olives, etc.

so many you can do!!!!!

I have a great idea for you! I work at Bath and Body Works, and when our hand soaps and Wallflower starter kits go on sale, I stock up. Right now is perfect for you, since the big Semi Annual sale is going on, and there are $2 hand soaps and $5 starter kits right now. I wrap up 2 of those Wallflowers, along with 2 or 3 hand soaps, and give them that. Practical, and alot of new homes need some extra scent in some rooms =)

I have a stash of them in my bathroom closet. Oh, I also buy the small candles we carry, they are $5 right now, and sometimes throw one of those in too. Cheap, but nice.

Can you tell I'm in my mid-20's and have tons of friends buying new homes?

not to be TOO off topic - but how long does the sale last for? It just started yesterday - right?

I need me some new body lotion...down to my last bottle of sweet pea...can you give me a heads up for what's on sale?

i agree with the ideas of a basket with stuff. maybe you could fill it with her favorite things whether it be candy, cookies or bathroom stuff. if you go to bath and body works that would be a great excuse for you to get some things too! ;) ;) lol im sure no matter what you get her she will love it!! good luck!

stinkerbelle - love your name, btw! the sale runs for 3 weeks, but we don't usually get much more new merchandise in during those weeks, so usually once it's gone - it's gone. It started Monday at 9am. Good thing is, each week we run different specials... that are usually pretty good, so it's a good reason to check back in each week and see.

I will tell you that Sweet Pea lotion is the regular buy 3 get one free, but you might find some discontinued body butters or something in the bins for $6 or so. I am stuck in Hebrew this summer and haven't worked the sale yet, so I can't guarantee we have any... but in Jan I know we carried some in discontinued packaging.

The sale always has great stuff, esp if you are looking for older scents that we don't carry anymore, or want to stock up on gifts... I know we will have Sweet Pea candles and such on sale, Sweet Pea is my FAVE candle we carry (with the exception of the Henri Bendels). It smells wonderful.

SOrry I wasn't TOO much help - I really encourage you to just go check it out, there is always TONS of great stuff at great prices. Sweet Pea is our second most popular scent and often is one of the first to go if there is anything =)

Oh stop - you were plenty of help! Actually - the sale in January is what got me hooked on sweet pea - found some of the healing hand cream for like $5.

I remember the girl came up to me - I could barely hold my purse, bag from GAP and about 5 bottles of lotion - and she said "would you like a basket?" Nope! I said - if I can't hold it - I'm not buying it...

20 seconds later I drop EVERYTHING and say...ok, I need a basket. hehehe only spent about $50 - but I got a TON of stuff...can't wait until Friday to check it out! (I'm up for any scent really - I like to try all new stuff.)

then the VS semi-annual sale is coming up on the 14th!

ok - sorry to get this all off topic!

I LOVE that healing hand cream in Sweet Pea. I have it in a trial size that I carry in my backpack. That's what I was talking about, we'll have discontinued packaging of fave scents in the bargain bins =) Like the butter, creams, etc. But Sweet Pea goes fast =)

Those baskets are the BEST selling tactic. If I can get someone to accept a basket, I almost always get them to buy twice what they came in for =) LOL. Though some people are persistant and refuse, because they KNOW they'll buy more than they intend to. I respect that, because I know how they work!

Yeah for the VS sale! CHEAP PANTIES HERE I COME!!!!!!!

ITA - nothing like fighting strangers for cheap thongs! hehehehe

I once took a gardening "basket"...

I bought an herb pot, a small bag of potting soil, several small spades/shovels, and some packets of herb seeds, plus a pair of gardening gloves. Arranged the bag of soil, packets, tools, etc. in the pot, and tied a raffia ribbon around the neck of the pot.

Okay, now that you've totally hijacked my thread..(just kidding! ;))
great idea...the soaps...but what's a "wallflower" from B&BW? For some reason, I have no idea what that could be??

Actually, the basket ideas are kind of neat too. Hmmmm, I'm not sure what to do. Maybe some thongs from VS...with hand soaps from B&BW...LOL! Seems to me HE'D like the thongs better than soap anyway! ;)

Edited: Wallflowers are those fancy dancy plug-ins. You can get the plug-in part and a few refills for it. I have them all over my house and LOVE them. I have a big Newfoundland dog and he can really smell up the place. Those things work wonders for us. I have the snowmen for the winter time and I switch them w/ the flowers in spring and summer. I always go by Bath and Body during their sales and "stock up" on refills for later dates or for gifts as a previous poster mentioned.

Funny story though.... I gave the Wallflowers to a very quirky individual as a housewarming once. She looked at me and asked why I would think she needs plug-ins... like the house stank or something. I thought ALL houses needed plug-ins, whether you have kids, cats, dogs, or funny smelling husbands, and they had 2 of the above. I thought I was being thoughtful. Guess she just didn't get it. Oh well, like I said, she is VERY quirky and not a good friend. But, be careful when selecting the gift. It might be misconstrued.

I've given bottles of wine, Bath and Body Wallflowers starter kits or Candles, the baskets of goodies for the guest bathroom (although those can add up fast and be costly if you're not careful).

Some really neat things I received: A jar of homemade cookie mix from a specialty store.... so simple and so neat, and I baked fresh cookies to boot. I also received platters or serving dishes which matched my Pfaltzgraff (sp?) dish set at home.

I just went to a BBQ for Memorial Day weekend and gave them freshly plucked flowers from our rose garden. I found a simple glass vase from a past Mother's Day or something, put them in there, tied a ribbon around it and told the hosts the flowers came from our own garden. I felt like such a Martha Stewart.

I've seen in magazines where you can purchase kits to make bath oils or soaps. I just haven't worked myself up to that level yet where I can make things. Too busy w/ little kids. Plucking flowers from the garden is as good as it gets around here right now.... And I had my DH do the plucking. Pathetic, isn't it. But they liked the bouquet.

Usually, I drop by Bath and Body though and pick up a gift basket of candles and such. That is what I am bringing to a BBQ next weekend. They do such a nice job of wrapping the items and know me by name now. But it does get costly.

Good luck deciding. :wave2:

I usually give candles, windchimes, or bird feeders

When friends of our bought their first home I made up a basket with a loaf of french bread, a box of salt, a nice candle and a bottle of wine and included this poem which I printed up on the computer and framed for their kitchen. They flipped over it and the poem is still in their kitchen.

"A Traditional Housewarming: Bread – So you never go hungry. Wine – So your life is always sweet. Salt – So there is always spice in your life. And a Candle – So you always have light."

::yes::

OOOOOOOOOH- Poochie, I LOVE THAT!!!!!!!!! =) I will have to write it down =)
