My SIL bought a female bassett hound just before Christmas at the age of 8 weeks. She is adorable. She does her business outside. When she is outside she knows what she is supposed to do and does it. She gets a lot of praise, treats, etc. Unfortunately she also does her business in the house. She is crate training. The other day she had a BM in her crate. Any thoughts on bassett hounds and how to house break them.

HI,
We have a 10 month old bassett hound who is FINALLY housetrained.
It sounds like her crate is too big for her.
The other thing i would consider is what is your sister feeding the pup? Bassetts have notoriously horrible digestive issues, and it could be she's getting something in her food that's causing her gastro distress and she CAN'T hold it while in her crate.
I know with our bassett she doesn't have a whole lot of patience when it's time to go out......sort of like the little boy who plays in the sandbox, ignoring the fact that he needs to pee......when she realizes it's time to go...It's RIGHT NOW.

I'd suggest having your sister check out www.dailydrool.com they have a great message board for bassett training and health issues.

Good Luck...they're precious!

Check out poochiebells.com!!! They are a life saver!!!

I love bassets.

Hound dogs can just be notoriously stubborn and it doesn't matter how small you get the crate, some dogs will just mess them.

But yes, it is worth a try to devise some sort of divider in the crate to really cut down on her space in the crate to just the length of the dog. The crate can be made bigger again when she gets more reliable.

Beyond that just the standard advice - always take the dog to the same spot for the business, always praise when the business is done correctly, don't leave the dog loose in the house to give it a chance to misbehave etc etc

She is still pretty little. Some dogs, just like some children, need more time.

No advice really, just wanted to say my beagle took forever to housebreak she could not hold her pee at all, and to be honest she didn't become housebroken until we put in a doggie door...to this day she can be sleeping on the couch and jump up and run out the doogie door as fast as she can go just to make it to pee or poop outside..I've never seen anything like it.

No advice, just lots of memories of my very first stubborn yet adorable puppy! He turned out to be the sweetest dog as he grew up, but boy he had a mind of his own! Good luck! I would love to have a bassett, but no more dogs for us anytime soon.

I have a dachshund puppy who is 6 months old. My problem is that he likes to go potty on the furniture. We take him outside, he does his business, we bring him back in and not even 10 minutes later, he jumps on the furniture and goes again. Even with us right there. I am getting so frustrated with him. I'm not trying to steal your thread I just feel your pain.

Steal away! Both are long and low to the ground dogs.

ok, this is the post for me! :lmao:

DBF has a male bassett hound- evil little lovable devil.

He is 6 or 7 years old and still pee's in the house. DBF brought him to a trainer who told him that if the dog was 75% house trained it was the best it was ever going to be :scared1: and told him that getting him privately trained would be a waste of money.

Yep, Chance is the stubbornest dog ever. But he spoons and cuddles so sometimes it's worth it.

PS it is in their NATURE to steal food- watch out. DBF's dog eats everything and anything. You have to be super super careful. DBF's mom calls me to complain about his dog (they live together for now).

Have you tried putting a bell on the door. We have a 6 month old boxer and this has worked wonders...Everytime we took him out we hit the bell, he caught on very quickly and now hits the bell whenever he needs to go out. Now if I could just get him to stop peeing when someone new comes over!! :confused3 Nothing says I am happy to see you like pee on the carpet:lmao: :lmao: Good luck with your new furbaby!

Dawn, you and I both know what the real problem is here. (:ssst: She should have gotten a Poodle.)

I know but how could I say it? Actually her vet told her that if she wanted a smart dog she should have gotton a poodle. ;)

I like that idea, even for my older dog.

Daisy looks like your baby!

We also did the bell thing with our basset (except instead of a bell I taught her to scratch the door - big mistake on my part!) and it works great. Also, until I knew she was house trained, she was not allowed to roam the house without a leash on and me watching. She never had a chance to pee anywhere - if I saw her acting suspicious, I grabbed her and we went outside.

But it does sound like her crate is too big. If she has room to poop in there, get a divider to make it smaller for the time being.

funny, before we brought Gracie home, her litter mom had nicknamed her Daisy.....we ALMOST kept it

I've yet to meet a Basset who doesn't have a "human" name. They have wonderful (albeit stubborn) personalities.

My late Lucy, the best dog that ever lived and an adorable basset to boot, was like your sil's dog. I complained to my vet at 12 weeks that she really seemed to get it, but then she'd stop and pee mid-playing, etc. He told me that females don't have full bladder control until 15 weeks. The day Lucy turned 15 weeks, she never had another accident in the house.

OTOH, my current cockapoo (who is too smart for the bell trick, because he would ring the bell when he wants to go out, not when he has to go out) seemed to get it, but he didn't totally get it. I started going outside with him, and when he did his business I'd give him a piece (crumb, really) of a milkbone. Worked like a charm!

When my DS was little, we had the cutest Basset Hound named Ladybug. Everytime you would pet her, she would pee. It didn't matter how many times or where she was. Needless to say, she never came in the house!:lmao:
