Anybody have one of these?
I volunteer with a all breeds dog rescue group, and we are a foster family. We are on our 4th dog which is a pure blood coonhound. She is such a sweetie. I have never had exerperience with a hound dog of such. I didnt think I would like her..LOL..ok, I am use to labs and those types. But, I can say I think I have fallen in love with this dog. She is as sweet as can be. She is 62pounds, b ut thinks she is a big old lap dog. She is forever trying to crawl into the chair with my 2 yr old, and doesnt realize how big she is. She is a black and tan coonhound...She had 8 puppies 3 months ago, some are adopted, others are still in other foster homes.
My husband thinks I get attached to all the dogs that come our way:confused3 ..We have had her for 2 weeks and this week she goes to get fixed...
All I can say is what a great family dog. She loves, loves , loves kids. I have3 of them. I sometimes take her up to the school to pick up my 7 yr old, and the kids flock around her, and she is in heaven.
I know hound dogs are not peoples first choice on dogs, but Ive read they make great family dogs. I can certainly see why...

I have a mutt that looks like a Red Bone coon hound. Great family dog. She thinks she is human. Sits in chairs just like a person would sit!

A coon dog is one of the best overlooked breeds. They are great with kids and are loving dogs. My friend has had alot of coon dogs over the years (that she uses for hunting) but I have yet to see one be agressive to anyone including kids.

I don't think there are any breeds in the hound family that aren't just totally sweet. I think they get overlooked because they just aren't as pretty or fancy as other breeds. They are very very people-oriented dogs, perhaps it's the hunting companion thing that is bred into them.

Beagles are my hound-of-choice. I keep thinking I want some cute little fancy thing, but you can't beat that hound dog personality.

Thanks for the post, though. In the future I'll be sure not to overlook the coonies.

I couldn't volunteer at a rescue group, I'd end up with every one of them in my bed!

Hounds are wonderful ...patient with kids, flexible (can be quiet or heavily involved in family activities) funny.

My beagle is always the neighborod kids fav dog. He loves the attention.

herc.

Hounds are the only breed in this house. We have dachshunds, but my dad raised beagles. I had a very close friend who always had coon dogs. Although the dog looks a bit scary just because of their size, they are so sweet and loyal. We don't do the frilly dogs here-only the good old loving hound!
