Hi,
I tried Hotwire for our rental this month to Orlando. It worked out just fine and they had the best price at the time I booked. The only things you have to be concerned about are:
1. making sure that you are not going to cancel, once you have paid you cannot get your money back.
2. the rental agency. If you want a specific agency, don't use Hotwire because you do not know which one you will get until after you have paid. We got Budget on our trip to MCO and they were in the Airport, but you may also get one of the agencies off airport. There are shuttles in the rental area that will take you to these agencies, so that does not necessarily have to present a problem. We were very happy with Budget and have been very happy every time we have used Hotwire to rent a hotel room, as well.

Yep, I've used hotwire a few times, for a car and a hotel. First time I ended up with Hertz (which I was happy about because they're my preferred car rental company) and the second time with Avis. Very happy with hotwire and definitely would use them again.
I am thinking of trying Hotwire for my Easter Vacation. The only rental I don't want to get stuck with is Thrifty. Had too many people I know have problems with them. Do they "assign" Thrifty alot, or is it mostly Budget, Dollar, Avis, Hertz?
What I found for Charlotte in Oct for 4 days minivan with all taxes was well over $350 with all agencies with all codes I could find. Hotwire was $225.
