We are going to WDW and Universal Studios in December. For the WDW portion of of our stay, we'll be on site. We are lo;)oking for someplace CLOSE to Universal and relatively inexpensive. (it will be my husband, son and myself!)

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jenn ;)
eta, if it makes a difference, my son will be 7 when we travel.

Bump - I am looking for this same info. We originally were going to stay at POP for 9 nights, but now I am thinking of staying at a hotel near Universal. Any suggestions? We will not have car so I would like to be very close to Universal. We arrive late on a Friday night so I was thinking up staying 3 nights by Universal and then moving over to POP.

I know you are looking for offsite but we've only ever stayed onsite at Universal and we LOVED it! Its not really all that inexpensive but the benefits outweighed the cost for us. The hotels are well within walking distance (Portafino is the farthest away but its also the most expensive so i would chose one of the other 2 over that) and when you stay onsite your room key is also your express pass for the rides. Its great to not have to wait in line for very long, especially since you are both only doing a few days there.

We're booked into the Holiday Inn Express on Major BLVD. It has decent reviews and I've been generally pleased with the chain. It has a shuttle, but times are limited. We rented a car.

Thanks for the replies.. Though I would LOVE to stay onsite-it is so not in the budget THIS TIME :) We are only doing 2 days at US and spending the majority of our time at WDW/POP We'll likely be driving from TN-so we'll have our car-just wanting something close and having never stayed in the hotels offsite--looking for good recommendations!!!

Thanks all! Jenn

Have you checked out the Universal site and their neighbor hotels. We had a short stay at one of the Marriott hotels one year and it was a pretty good deal. We had a basic breakfast included. The shuttle was free. Early admission one morning. I believe we also got a package deal and it ended up being cheaper than doing the hotel and tickets. Tell Harry hi for us. :)

Haha.. Didn't think to look at their partner hotels.. I will definitely check that out.. Thanks again all :)

We stayed at the Sheraton Studio City which is about half a mile from US/IOA. I'd definitely stay there again. There is a Doubltree right across the street that gets consistently good reviews.

Fairfield Inn by Marriott on Canada Avenue was excellent. They had jimmy dean breakfast sandwiches at breakfast. There breakfast was excellent for be free.

Be warn the maid service come 8:00 a.m..

We stayed at the DoubleTree. We loved it. It was so close that you were able to walk to the parks which saves you the parking fee. Have fun!

Do any of their rooms hold a family of 6 (my DH, myself, and our 4 kids)?

We stayed at Hyatt Place Universal, which is across the street from Universal property. The rooms were really big, with two double or queen beds and then a fold out sleeper sofa as well. We also had free breakfast. We walked a few days and it took around 10 minutes to get to the Citywalk entrance. Got it through Priceline for $30/night(before WWOHP)

This year, I used Priceline again and got Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Maingate To Universal Orlando for $45/night for our first 2 nights in Orlando. It sounds pretty decent and is close to Universal as well.

We are staying at the nearby Fairfield. It has excellent reviews on Trip Advisor and I'm using my Marriott points.

I got a great rate at the Hampton on Kirkman. The rate was $50.00 for two queens and includes breakfast for this upcoming June. I found this deal on Travel Zoo.

Hyatt Place didn't charge anything for parking. I wonder if the Holiday Inn will charge?
