Hotel tipping: how much, when and how?

[To Disneyland and Beyond]

We tip $5 each day for a standard 2 Queens room with 2 adults and 2 kids and $10 each day for a suite. I've always tipped - its just our family custom. Also - I feel like that is the part of the cost of hotel stay that is most important to me as I know it is probably going directly to someone who works really hard. At least my hope is that is who it goes to. Last time we stayed in a hotel, the house keeper left us a thank you note for tipping! That was so sweet.

I'm gonna be the odd one out here....we don't leave tips for housekeeping (this thread is making me reconsider that) which is odd for me because we really tip everyone else quiet well. I guess I have always just figured I'm paying a high amount for the room and that should automatically include cleaning whereas I know wait staff's etc. don't really make an hourly wage. There was one time when my Father had a really (and I mean really) bad bloody nose and left a bit of a mess for the maid. He did track her down and gave her $20.00 which I felt was proper because it was out of what she should have to do on a daily basis.......so do housekeepers make minimum wage?

I honestly never realized this was a "thing".

With one person in the room, I usually tip $2-3 a night unless there are issues.

I work in housekeeping, while the hotel I work for pays more than minimum(which is $10.45 in my province) I think there are probably a lot that dont. Tips are not at all expected but highly appreciated, that being said, I commented above how we divvy up tips.

I love that that was your comment.....and that makes me reconsider my bad ways ..... It does kind of upset me though because everyone should be making enough money without tips......lord knows we are paying enough for rooms. sometimes this wholet set up is messed up......

I live in a non-tipping country so I'm never really sure if I'm doing the 'tipping' thing correctly. But I tipped housekeeping $5 a day when staying at GCH (with a little note so they'd know it was for them) and was unexpectedly rewarded with a generous amount of little chocolates left on our bedside table! It totally made my day.

I didn't think that tipping housekeeping was meant to be full compensation for cleaning the room.

We always tip mousekeeping at Disney (DL and WDW). We print out cute Disney envelopes (you can search online and find great ones that say they are for the Mousekeepers) so they know for sure that it's for them. We also keep a neat and tidy room, so they don't have to straighten up much. We do tip daily, since the person cleaning one day isn't always the one who will be back at the end of the trip.
