My cousin, in her late 30s, is flying on a plane for the first time EVER! :scared:

She is visiting Long Island with her husband (who has also never flown:scared1: ) and 3 kids. Her FIL and a few ILs will be joining them, and they are staying in a simple hotel in PJ. She would like something a little "nicer"...you know, a bit more plush, but yet still affordable. She also wants to stay very near the hotel her ILs are staying at. We have both googled, but we are kind of confused as to what cities or towns are around PJ. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I think it is called the Danford Inn. Althought I haven't been inside the rooms, the hotel itself is nice as is the restaurant. It is in a great location on the water near all the shops and restaurants.

if they want a quaint, old place go for danford's. it's right on the water, next to where the ferry docks. stores nearby along with some nice restaurants and bars. great seafood over there too! if they want a chain hotel more inland the holiday inn in setauket/stonybrook is nice, but from what i can remember there is nothing in walking distance. that's more for business travellers.

port jeff is a really nice town. hope they enjoy their first flights!

Im not positive about hotel suggestions, but towns that are very close to Port Jeff are Stonybrook, Mt. Siani, Miller Place, and Setuaket. They would however need a car, they are close driving but not walking. Port Jefferson is a great town. If they need any suggestions about what to do there, I can help with that! Hope they enjoy their trip :)

Another vote for Danford's :thumbsup2
Nice hotel, excellent location.

Another one for Danford's. It's in a great location right on the water and is walking distance from the main are of Port Jeff.

FYI, just down a way but only about 10 minutes (or less) is the Three Village Inn in Stony Brook. My parents used to stay there when they'd visit me when I was in college (@ SUNY Stony Brook).

Another option is Three Village Inn in Stony Brook--it's about 10 minutes away from Port Jefferson. The Inn is near the LI sound as well, and steps away from a very nice shopping center.

ETA Looks like Rick and I posted at the same time.

Another vote for Danfords, it's a great location. I think the only hotels in Port Jeff are Danfords and one called the Heritage Inn.

I love the Three Village Inn. Although, I haven't stayed there. I Just attended two luncheons there when I used to work at the University. There are shops right across the street. DH and I just love going there in the Spring and Summer months.

OP, if you cousin and her family are on a budget, there is also the Holiday Inn Express on Nesconset Hwy (aka Route 347) in Setauket.

Port Jeff is really a nice town and is one that DH and I love to visit.

Off topic, but did you ever go to The Country House restaurant while you were on LI? I got married there, it's very close to the Three Village Inn.

My grandparents lived in Stony Brook, right near SUNY, so I've visited that area for years. Hotels pickings are slim. We've always stayed at the Holiday Inn on Nesconset Highway because it was most affordable. It's a busy road with lots of stores etc.

Is Three Village Inn near the post office - bank ??? that has the eagle that flaps it's wings on the hour. Does it still do that?

I really appreciate all the responses! I sent her links to Danford...I do have to say that it got awful reviews on tripadvisor.com...but then again, a lot of WDW resorts that I LOVE get bad reviews, so you gotta take it with a grain of salt. I think the 3 village inn may be too swanky, and it is $200 a night (starting.) They have two boys ages 6 and 9, and a 3 year old daughter, so I think 3 Village may be too "nice" if that makes sense.

The ILs are staying at Heritage, and it is only about $100 a night. Do you think that is a respectable, decent place? They were just hoping for something with interior corridors, a lobby entrance, a restaurant in the hotel...you know what I mean, right?

If anyone wants to throw out some family friendly activities for them to do while there, please feel free to share them! They want to do the pumpkin (or was it corn?) maze and do fall type of stuff that we can't do here in FL.

Oh, and yes, they will have a car! I am so excited for her. She is so nervous about flying, but excited to finally leave the state! I am a former flight attendant, so I am trying to calm her, but truth be told...I don't like to fly now, either!

Here's a web site that lists places to go pumpkin picking. There is one right in Setauket, however, it's just pumpkin picking. Most of the farms that have the corn mazes are located out East. There are also more out East than is listed on this website.

::yes:: All in walking distance. The Post office is across the street in the commons and the bank is across the street from the commons.

DH and I love walking around there and going to Robinson's Tea Room and Crabtree & Evelyn. DS5 also loves walking over to the lake and feeding the ducks. We usually get the duck feed from the Grist Mill, but I don't know if it's still open or if it's closed for the season. I believe you can still purchase the duck feed from the deli.

My DD graduated from there in December..Great school!

We used to stay at the Holiday Inn Express. The rooms were large, clean and reasonable. Actually I stayed once for free with the points..They have a continental breakfast and was nearby many eateries along.. I think it was 348? They also have an indoor pool.
Stony Brook is the town over from Port Jeff if interested.

The corn mazes out east are great. There is a wonderful farmstand called Harbes. It is on Sound Ave. in Mattituck. There is a corn maze, pumpking picking, roasted corn, tons of vegetables and stuff there. There are a ton of farmstands along one road out there. If they need directions, just pm me, i'd be glad to help!

That's where we going on Sunday. We've been going since before DS5 was born and finally got to take him for his first time when he was 4 months old. It's our absolute favorite place to go in October.

Hey Rick, when did you attend Stony Brook? My DH attended there and received his BS in CS in 1996. He's been working in the Systems dept over in the HSC library for 11 years now.
