I am taking my kids to Europe for 2 weeks at the end of August and I am stressed about planning it all. We will have Eurail passes but I am having trouble with hotels. I backpacked around Europe in the 90's and I want to do it better this time. I like modern day conveniences and toilet paper!

Does anyone have suggestions for Rome, Athens. Istanbul, Venice, Florence, Paris and London?

Also, does anyone know how to get to tiny little villages near Campobasso in Italy? We want to go where my Father-in-law was born but it seems so complicated.

Thanks

I really enjoyed Hotel Artemide in Rome.
You could hire a car/transfer service that offers private tours for a day out of Rome to visit the villages. You'll have to come up with an itinerary to get a quote, but a reputable company will help with the planning.

In Paris, I highly recommend anything in the Astotel chain. I've stayed at the Hotel Malte and Hotel George, my sister has also stayed at the Hotel Joke.

In Rome we stayed at the Hotel Golden, which was a really nice little family run hotel near the Borghese Gardens and US embassy. The area was quiet, while being an easy walk to all the touristy stuff.

Another chain I've had good luck with is Room Mate Hotels. It looks like they have hotels in Florence, Istanbul, Paris, and Rome from your list. I've stayed at the ones in Madrid, Granada, and Malaga.

We stayed at B4B Athens Signature Hotel last summer and we loved it. It was relatively inexpensive, super clean, quiet, convenient location, friendly staff, breakfast included, and offered a free smart phone to use while there. https://www.signatureathens.com/

I'd check out the hotels that Adventures by Disney uses. We did the Italy/Amalfi trip several years ago. The hotels we stayed in were wonderful - perfect locations and so nice!

I'm going to jump on this bandwagon and see if anyone has referrals for Paris hotels that are within walking distance (1 km or less) of the Eiffel Tower. That's the only landmark we want to see on this trip....

Unfortunately no hotel advice only a word of caution. Do not stay at anything associated with Marriott they are horrible and we got screwed by them. We were supposed to go on a med cruise in June 2020 and had planned to come in a little early to tour Rome. My DM was a Marriott Bonvoy member and called the special area for MB members in August 2019 to book the hotel we were interested in and the person she spoke to told her about a special deal but said she had to pay up front did not mention anything about it being non refundable and nothing was mentioned about it on our reservation. She did not know you should never pay in advance. COVID hit and a few months before the trip in April 2020 we knew we would not be able to go so sent an e-mail to the hotel directly letting them know we had to cancel and requested a refund. They refused would only give a voucher. We explained to different high ups at the hotel that we would not be able to travel during the voucher time period and wanted a refund but they still refused. My DM then called Marriott both the special area for members and the regular area and spoke to many people went up the chain and no one would do anything saying the hotel was a franchise they had no control over it and that is also when we found out it was non refundable even though we were never told that and was not on the confirmation. The people she spoke to were awful. She contacted her credit card company and had to submit something to them explaining the situation with attachments of every document for that trip even though the issue was only with that hotel but they denied because of the voucher that was offered. We are not complainers are very nice and easygoing people where it takes a lot for us to get upset but we are boycotting Marriott and try to warn others when we can so they can avoid them.

We had a lovely stay at The Dilly Hotel in London and really loved the location. In Paris, while it's not that close to the Eiffel Tower, the Hotel Les Dames Du Pantheon is a wonderful boutique hotel.

We've stayed in a few hotels n London. What is your budget? I can recommend from our list based on your desired price point.

In Paris, we stayed in the Vendome area. Really great central location on Rue de Castiglione. We were about a block from Tuileries garden and about 15 minutes walk to the Louvre. Out Hotel was the Lotti but there was a Westin next door that I said I was going to try next time. We had a junior suite at the Lotti but it still felt like a matchbox.

I agree with Astotel. We did The Palm. Quaint, clean and modern. About ten minute walk to the tube.

We've stayed at the Hotel Relais Bosquet twice when in Paris. It's a small boutique hotel in the 7th arrondissement...very close to the Eiffel Tower. It's also right off Rue Cler which is a charming cobblestone street with lovely cafes and markets. It's a dreamy little street in Paris :). It's a 3 star hotel...but gets the job done for sure.

In Rome...we've stayed three different stays at the Albergo del Senato. Again, it's a 3 star....when in Europe we're usually out and about and don't need spa or room services so a good 3/4 star is what we look for...and location. Albergo del Senato is a wonderful boutique hotel that overlooks the Piazza della Rotunda, which is where the Pantheon is situated. It's amazing. Also...it's right around the corner from Piazza Navona....which is also amazing. Highly recommend.

Its been a while but in Rome we stayed at Hotel Dei Mellini. In london MArriott Kensington - had club level which was great though kids not allowed so we took up to our kid, and then also the Royal Garden Hotel in london. Paris we did VRBO which was great and then disneyland paris hotel

In London, we stayed at the Royal Horseguards hotel. You couldn't select a better location for a hotel. 5-star hotel. It was on the Thames, in Westminster. It was just a couple blocs to Trafalgar Square, the Churchill War Rooms and Westminster Abbey/Parliament. The London Eye was just across the river, I recommend springing for the champagne ride if you go on that. There were only about 20 people on our capsule. This made it very easy to move around to see everything.

Buckingham Palace is a short stroll through St. James Park.

In Venice, we stayed at the Ad Place. It was a 4-star and only around $120 per night in 2018. In Florence, I found an apartment, just off the Duomo's piazza. It was around $100 per night, though I can't recall the name of it. I was worried about these being so inexpensive, but lodging in both cities wasn't bank breaking.

In Rome, we stayed at the Curio Brand, Hilton Aleph. I used my Hilton Honors points to stay in this 5-star gem. A block from the subway that is only 2 stops from the Vatican.

Are you really going to go to all of the places you listed in 2-weeks? We typically pick a country and stay for 10-days to 2-weeks so we can truly appreciate it.

TripAdvisor has been a great resource for finding good hotels. I usually sort by "Traveler Ranked" and pick something near the top that fits in my budget. They haven't steered me wrong yet.

Wow. Thanks for all the advice.
Yes, we are trying to see everything I listed. Everyone wants to see different things so it will be a fast-paced mega-tour, if I can figure out how to fit it all in.
I would prefer to spend under $300 Canadian a night (about $233US) if at all possible.
I just need to get our itinerary finalized so that I can start booking hotels.
Everyone has been so helpful. I really appreciate it.
