hotel outside of Toronto

We'd like to find a nice hotel just outside of Toronto where we can ride public transportation into the city, rather than stay downtown. Is there any place like this?

If not, any place we could park and ride in if we stay in a hotel say in Mississauga?

(The reason behind this is that I'm not keen on driving in the center of downtown, and the hotels are so expensive the days we're there that we can save upwards of $300 on 2 nights by staying outside the city. Just crunching numbers to see if it's doable.)

Greetings from Toronto. Firstly, have a look at the Toronto Transit Commission TTC website. If you stay in places like Mississauga you may be taking 2 buses before getting to the subway. Have a look at streetcar routes..these run East and West and run through the center of town or into a subway station. Also compare cost to how many people you have. You can get family and day passes. There are, kiss and rides, at certain subway stations where you can park for $5 bucks a day as well. Hope this isn't too unclear.

Disclaimer: I don't live in Toronto. I do visit Toronto once or twice a year. In my opinion, it is a good strategy to avoid driving downtown. Parking is expensive, and there's a lot of gridlock during rush hour. But, commuting in from that distance is not something that I would do. You will wind up spending a lot of time in transit.
There are two public transportation agencies whose websites you should look at. They are: http://ttc.ca which deals with the subway, buses and streetcars; and, http://GoTransit.com which runs commuter trains and buses.
From a quick online search this morning, it looks as if there may be limited parking available at various Park and Rides. Not sure that there is one that would be handy for you.

It will be a huge hassle to try to take transit into Toronto everyday from Mississauga.

If I were you, I would book a hotel room in downtown Toronto, and just park your car once you get here. It's really not that bad driving downtown.

Try Priceline or Hotwire to get a decent room downtown for around $100. I know the Sheraton Hotel on Queen Street works with Hotwire. There is public underground parking directly across the street from the hotel.

There is a holiday inn within walking distance of Oakville GO Train that we stay at when we go to hockey games.. Will bring you right downtown to union station in about 1/2 hour

As long as you are close to the Go Train you are good. check the GO website for station locations. that will take you right to Union at least every 30min on the Lakehore West line (starts in Aldershot). From Union you can go anywhere.

There is a holiday inn within walking distance of Oakville GO Train that we stay at when we go to hockey games.. Will bring you right downtown to union station in about 1/2 hour

That's the Holiday Inn at QEW and Trafalgar. When we were living out past Kitchener, we used to stay there during the indy car races. Takes you to Union and you can catch city transit / subway / whatever you need. Very handy.

Thanks so much. These are all helpful suggestions. I honestly don't know what we will do.

I didn't think we'd ride the bus or train from Mississauga, just that we might get a hotel there and drive in somewhere to park. I need to add it all up. Train passes or TTC passes for all of us, we might be better off staying downtown.

have you tried sites like expedia or hotwire they can often give very good deals on hotels that the hotels can't offer themselves. Also depending on how many people in your party and when you will be traveling getting TTC passes may not be your best option. For example a day pass is for one person only except on weekends where you can use for up to four people. http://www.ttc.ca/ You can ckeck the TTC website for all fars and other info.

I would highly rec. the Novotel at Yonge and Empress. The subway stop is below the hotel, you don't even have to go outside. It will zip you back and forth downtown super quickly.

I stayed at the particular hotel the previous poster mentioned and it was very convenient. There was some construction going on at the time, but it was not excessive and the subway was very close. There is a second cup coffee shop and a pharmacy just outside the shopping area. It was quiet and overall, I would stay there again if I was in the area.
